sporty fluid change?
« on: December 17, 2007, 11:30:18 AM »

Ok - new gf wants to learn how to change the fluids on her sporty.  I always do my 110 and old tc88 myself (amsoil in primary/engine, redline in tranny).

Methinks - NBD until I look down at 883 and the belt drive is on wrong side....  Same O-rings? already got sporty chrome filters...

Can somebody with sporty experience drop me a line on correct drain plug location, primary change proceedure, and capacities for all three holes?

Thanks,

Mark

My 98 Sportster had a rubber hose going to a welded fitting on the frame and held with a hose clamp.  You just loosen the hose clamp and pull the hose off of the fitting.

You'll use a 11105 o-ring on the drain plug for the primary/xmsn.  Primary/xmsn capacity is 32 oz............I think, but i'll verify once I get home.  TQ for plug is 19 lbs/ft.  Primary chain tension is 3/16" to 1/4"............I think, but again, I'll verify when I get home.  There are only two holes on a sporty.  Drain plug for the crankcase varies by year.  For 05, the oil bag drain hose is plugged with a plastic piece which secures to the frame.  The hose secures to the plastic piece with a worm drive clamp.  for 06, the oil bag drain hose is plugged with a plastic plug and secured with a worm drive clamp.  The assembly hangs free.  Oil Bag capacity for those two year models is 3.6 qts.  Might want to steer clear of anything thicker than 20W50 for the primary/xmsn.  I use AMSOIL MCV 20W50 in both holes on my sporty.

Many thanks Henry!  Her scoot is an '06 883.

If I thought she would be around awhile I'd go buy the service manual... LOL

Hey Mark,
I got the capacities right, but I erred the primary chain deflection, failed to provide the correct primary drain plug TQ range, and left out some other important information.
Primary chain deflection with hot engine:  1/4-3/8"
Primary chain deflection with cold engine:  3/8-1/2"
Primary chain tensioner nut TQ:  20-25 lbs/ft
Primary chain inspection cover TQ:  40-60 lbs/in
Primary chaincase drain plug TQ:  14-30 lbs/ft
Derby cover TQ:  84-108 lbs/in

BTW, I have an 06 XL Service Manual.  Holler if you want it.

Naitram,

I bought the Service Manual for her scoot today -- I think she's a keeper.

I'd pay three months salary if I could buy a service manual for her!

Too bad the more time I spend around women the less I know about them....
