Dreaded Oil Leak on 08 FLHTCUSE3
« on: February 15, 2008, 05:06:32 PM »

Hi Guys,
I am due to take delivery of a new 08 Duracell sometime in March / April, and after reading all those threads on the dreaded rear cylinder oil leak I have started to lose sleep over the problem.
The bike will be UK spec, although I believe the 110" is the same as supplied in the US, just other cosmetic bits are different.
My question is, are there any guys in the UK ( or US for that matter) with a new 110" bike that has developed a problem already?

Ride Safe,

Jazz    :-\ :nixweiss:

Who's first? ..I'll give it a go.

I developed the rear cylinder leak at 5,500 miles. I had it repaired at 8,500 miles. At 15,000 miles I noticed it seeping again. I've not had anything else done since then. I've got my fingers crossed HD will come up with a permanent fix.

I just got my bike out of the shop for the rear head gasket oil leak.  2500 miles; pretty sad.  A friend of mine with the same bike is scheduled for the repair next week; 3000 miles.  My bike was repaired using the new composite head gasket (Harley hasn't given it a part number and only gives it out for warranty repair).  Harley also approved a 5# head torque increase.  My fingers are crossed.

Another thread here talks about an article in American Iron Magazine that goes into the problem in depth.  I'm going to pick one up and see what they say.

With the current "original size" barrels and the large 110 bore, in my opinion, there just isn't enough room left for the head gasket to seal.  Add to that the barrel sleeve migration, it seems to me that anyone's chance of getting a trouble free engine are slim and none.  I sure hope I'm wrong, but this bike ('08) is my second try at Harley loyalty; I also had an '07 which was repaired three times before I sold it.

There are larger bore motors out there that use the stock TC stud pattern like the 110 without issue. Even HD's 113 works OK and doesn't have these issues. Why they just didn't make them 113's, instead of these 110 POS, is beyond me! :nixweiss:

Which brings up the question, what is the difference in the 110 cylinders and the 113 cylinders, other than .060" in bore size?

They are phsically a much larger casting which means more gasket sealing area, more heat dissapation (sp?) less liner movement.
The reason everyone isn't going to these for a ix is that the engine case needs to be bored to accept the larger base.

Not enough delivered in the UK yet (and no weather to ride those that have been delivered) to tell, Jazz. Plenty in the US though I believe.

Hi Jim,
The oil leak problem has given me the jitters bearing in mind the bikes cost almost £25K!!  Looks like I will stick with it anyway, and forget about the leak until if and when it happens!
I like the sound of your Codsworth,  How come only 17 K miles??

Yes, scary!  I'm waiting for it to appear on my replacement engine (though it didn't appear on the first engine!).

17k miles because since I started riding Harleys I never drive it any more!  :huepfenjump3:
