what should be maximum head temperature?
« on: February 09, 2008, 07:19:24 PM »

the 08 fxdse2 has 2k miles now...I've made some changes to cool it down...I believe the oil leaks, blown head gaskets, and cylinder liner movement are all heat related...been checking head temp with an infrared gun...what is the max safe temperature?

We don't know. I've seen 380 and lived. Head temp is VERY dependant on where you measure it. I measure mine by aiming the laser pointer right at the silver ring around the base of the spark plug. That's an easy spot that others can repeat so we're ralking apples to apples. If temps are measures other places, you can't compare them as they're too different.

I've got a RayTek ST Pro. There are lots of non-contact thermals out there.

Check this thread for ideas, and a lot of discussion on this topic.http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=12063.0

been checking just to the left of rear plug...it's been 300*F at the most, but then that's at 60* ambient...I'd just like to have a benchmark to know when to shut it down

I will ask the dumb question....what is "double IPA"?

I bought my RayTec thru an industrial supplier - I don't remember exactly who - but it likely was McMaster-Carr or Grainger or someone like that...

India Pale Ale are strong enough. A double would put you down for the count. :nervous: :drink: :drunk:
