The stand offs on the back plate are shorter that the depth of the AC element. When you tighten the element down it crushes it as shown. Easy fix, remove the element and use small spacers between the stand offs and the backplate. Don't space it out oo much or the element won't seal on the backplate.
That would be my suggestion as well. I don't think the support bracket would contribute to this particular fit issue.
Remove the 3 screws holding the the element to the standoffs and check the clearance between the standoffs and the plate of the filter element. There should be a small clearance, that's what causes the element to seal against the backing plate when you tighten the screws. Just make sure the clearance is the same at all the standoffs, and use small washers to "adjust" the clearance. If you don't like messing with washers, just bend the metal plate at the mounting holes to adjust the clearance (see sketch attached). Odds are the plate wasn't located perfectly during manufacture of the filter element, and the top screws are pulling the plate over further than the bottom one.
