Blued Muffler
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:27:19 PM »

I recently ran into a fellow I know and he had purchased a '07 SE Ultra.  The dealer installed a set of Bassani slash-cut mufflers, with a high flow AC and a SERT.  The dealer discouraged him from installing true duals because they said they have difficulty tuning them.  Anyway, they told him that very likely the Bassani's would discolor.  His right muffler where it meets the head pipe has not only blued but is nearly black.  The left side looks fine.  I told him I thought the dealer was wrong and that with a properly tuned bike the muffler should not blue like it has.  He only has a few thousand miles on the bike.  My opinion is that the dealer does not know how to tune a SERT and that he should go back to the dealer and demand a new muffler and a proper tuning job.  I'm appreciate some thoughts on this.  Thanks.

Bassani states on their website that if the vehicle is properly tuned, their pipes shouldn't blue. I guess the only way to tell is to poll everyone on the site running Bassani systems

How bout it folks, what's your take ?

We tune a lot of new bikes and bikes with new exhaust systems.  First thing we do is fatten up the map to protect the pipes.  Then we tune the engine.  If we see a lean trend in any area, we shut it down and correct it before continuing.  If we were to start with a canned map or dealer flash and proceed to tune, the pipes will yellow then blue form the overly lean condition.

If care is taken, for the most part, the pipes should not blue during tuning.  With that said, there are some 2-1 pipes that concentrate the heat at the collector and they tend to blue regardless.  There are also some mufflers that tend to yellow where the baffle begins.  We even have fans specifically for cooling the exhaust to help minimize the chances of discoloring the exhaust but that still doesn't guaranty they will not discolor.

As I just found out - I have a Basani's Power Curve on my SERK - a bit of yellow, no blue and the SERK has 11,373 on it, not sure how many on the current pipes...
