5th gear whine
« on: May 11, 2008, 10:10:13 PM »

Does anybody else's tranny seem to whine a bit when it's in 5th gear??

All the other gears are quiet, even 6th.

Don't know what 5th is complaining about but I don't like it.

Try some Reldine Shockproof Heavy. It'll quiet it a little. But it's inherent to the design. Get used to it or pull the tranny and use the Baker gear change. Not worth it. Just get louder pipes. I don't hear it anymore with my Performance Fatcats! ;)

Seems to be more pronounced on some bikes for some reason.  Never, ever had any problem at all on mine.  But I have used the Redline Shockproof Heavy since about 500 miles.  Really like the stuff and think it would help.  Give it a try.

Never heard it on my 07 but on some loaner bikes it was really bad. I run RL Heavy Duty Shookproof but I never heard it even with Syn 3 as delivered.

DD-

The 5th gear whines as the teeth are straight cut as the other 5 gears are cut at an angle..  I think the word is helical cut.  Why 5th gear is cut different, I do not know-maybe so you know you are in 5th?    :nixweiss:   :)   Anyway, try the Shockproof heavy when a fluid change is needed and ride and enjoy your new bike.

Cool, I never knew I had a "Rock Crusher" tranny in my bike  :)

The noise is not too bad but noticeable

I changed the tranny fluid to Mobil 75-90 weight Synthetic gear oil a month ago but I will try the Shockproof next time.

Thx for the help.
