TP BOX owners please HELP!!!! :nixweiss:

I just returned from a 5400 mile trip to Sedona. I was having to add more oil than I normally have ever had to. I used over 2 quarts for the whole trip. That's with an oil change in the middle.

Well I found some of the oil it is in the primary case. When I removed the inspection cover oil poured out. I had over 48 oz. of primary oil. So I am going to remove the TP boxes and see if my oil usage reduces.

Do you guys thinks that the TP boxes could have improper crankcase venting???

Not sure about improper venting, but they sure don't do a damn thing to stop the puking! What a mess. But I think the breather system itself is undersized for these larger engines, especially when we hot rod them out. I would suspect a leak like AJ has from behind the comp sprocket. Might want to check that seal. ;)

I'm going to start with putting stock boxes back on see if it stops. Will keep you posted.

I'll going to show my ignorance on the subject and ask, "what are TP boxes?"

I'm trying to tie the oil usage problem with the primary housing and I'm drawing a blank.

I'm sure it's just a brain fart of some sort on my part.

Thanks for explaining in advance.

TP (Total Performance) is a Engine Company out of CT. Their rocker boxes are called ProVents and are supposed to be superior to HD's umbrella valve system in their covers. Didn't notice a bit of difference with either. Still makes a puking mess! I'm modifying the HPI backplate next week to dump it under the bike. But the TP's look a whole lot nicer than the HD's! ;)

Dan - TP Engineering, go here to visit their site:
http://www.tpeng.com/rockerboxes.php

Brad - the only way I can think of for motor oil to get into the primary chaincase is at the crankshaft oil seal.  If that seal fails it wouldn't be necessary for the breathers to be plugged for the oil to find it's way to the primary chaincase, the pressurized oil/air mist will follow any path of lower pressure.  Really need to have that primary pulled and the seal checked out.

Yup! That's exactly what happened to me. The seal came loose and the oil transfered into the primary at 24,000 miles. Chief thinks that when they put the bolt back in, even though they used Loctite, it was not free of oil and did not hold. At least it makes sense.
