Help with Simple Task Clutch Cable Swap?
« on: August 22, 2008, 12:33:15 AM »

Ok, its been a long few weeks, gave the fiancee the boot and changed some bars on the bike. Now for the part I need help on. 2008 Softail swap out a clutch cable. Remove old cable. Install new cable, put all the slack in the cable, turn adjuster screw until lightly bottomed, back off 1/2 to 1 turn. Adjust remainder of cable off the cable adjuster. I have a clutch and can watch the pressure plate move a good 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch or so, but if you put the bike in gear and throw the clutch in it will not roll.

At first i thought it was the throw on the cable but we installed a harley extended cable with the same throw tonight and we have the same problem. I squeezed the clutch a few times prior to adjustment to set the ramps and the clutch feels good, except its not engaging.

I need some help understanding what else I need to do. Its frusting since I've swapped a lot of these out in the past and never had this problem. Any and ALL help is appreciated.

Loosen the cable adjuster first sop tht it is completely collapsed. Adjust the screw so that it just touches the rod (by feel)  then back it out to the 1/2 turn. Then lock it down with the nut being sure not to move the screw. Adjust cable so that there is about 1/8" free at the cable perch.
