click/tick and decel popping...
« on: June 04, 2008, 01:18:22 PM »

Been meaning to ask this - and as most of my questions is based on pure ignorance of my bike and twin cams in general...

My SERK has the 103 - dad added the Basanni Power Curve and slip ons - not sure which specific model they are (have it at home) and the Hyper Charger...  He had a SERT and I saw a receipt for a Dyno Tune he had done, no details, maps, printout - nada - so that is sort of the baseline.

Has 11500 on it...

There is a constant, low volume ticking in the vicinity of the center of the tank...  From the sound, I am guessing Fuel Pump?  Sounds like others I have dealt with/played with over the years.  Doesn't appear to be coming from the heads - so not thinking push rods or lifters, and it is constant - never goes away.

Second question - I have a slight "miss" in the 2-3k range, not always "smooth" and a very noticeable backfire/popping on decel...bad thing?

I know this is about impossible to diagnose via the forum...just wondering from my symptoms if I should pursue someone more qualified to look her over.  On my other bike, if I get a gnat on the muffler, I hear it and can tell what it is - and have it fixed before I ride again.  The SERK is just "to new" to me.

Sean, I'm not sure (honestly had never thought of it before) but don't think I've ever heard a normally functioning fuel pump running over the sound of engine noise.  Heard a bad one once that had a report greater then engine noise.  But not for very long.

If you're speaking to an engine off noise you're very likely spot on.  Ticking chugging sort of sound.

Your miss/surge/whatever it is going down the road is obviously not right; or at least not ideal.  A tiny bit of decel pop I honest never give a thought too.  If it's more than just a bit, however, I'd probably consider as a first course of action another attempt at a tune.  Just might cure your surge/miss/whatever and decel pop all at once.

Will close with a statement of the obvious (sorry).  Plugs are good?  It's old enough now might even think about a set of wires.  Do you know if the fuel filter has ever been checked?

Good luck man.  Keep having fun with dad's bike.  Ride it like you stole it then make sure the kids do the same thing some day :2vrolijk_21: .

The fuel pump should come on when you turn on the ignition, without starting. I would think if it was the pump you would hear the same noise without starting the engine.

Check all the fasteners on the exhaust system from flange to mufflers....they can and do loosen up and can cause a pop.  The other ticking may be just a top end sloppin around broken rocker spring maybe..did you already change oil?

It's a pretty steady, but low ticking - like someone repeatedly opening and closing a ball point?

Was going to pull a plug to check them - have not done it yet.

Pretty sure it has not had a fuel filter change...manual had that at 20k so hadn't even given it much thought.  He also used a fuel conditioner religiously, and I am running Lucas with every fill.  Did Sea Foam to clean out any varnish from it sitting, he had STABIL'd it before he put it up the last time.

Wires is a good thought - pretty sure he did not change them.  Any rec's for good ones?  I was also wondering about an SE ignition pack - not sure what comes on the stock SERK...mine is just plain old black.

I am riding it more and more now that I have it registered to get on base...  Took a chunk out of my left saddlebag today, still mystified how - it's on the inside back of the cover, right under the passenger seat, pretty much hidden, but I see it.  1/4 long, to the fiberglass...  NO CLUE how I did it.

Thanks!

Oil changed, Mobil 1 with Redline in the Primary and Trans - did that week before last.  It's not really coming from the heads - but understand that can be deceiving, since things transfer from piece to piece...

Might have to get a stethoscope and do some poking around to nail down the source.
