my first flat tire in 30 years on a mtorcycle
« on: May 26, 2008, 03:29:47 PM »

Getting a flat tire has never really entered my mind, unitil last week coming home from Myrtle Beach.

Traveling down I95 at 11:30 PM I thought the wind has surely picked up a lot, bike started drifting all over the place.

I decided to pull off the next exit at a truck stop to look into the problem.

Tire was just above completely flat and someone was looking out for me......

I bought a tire plug kit , removed screw from tire , installed plug and filled with air and on the road again in no more than 15 min

my center stand helped this situation....

extremely lucky this time...............

what really sucks is the rear tire only has 3000 miles on it........

I just had to replace my rear tire with less than 500 miles on it. My center stand also helped, it caused the flat! One of the set screws worked it way out that was holding the foot and the foot dropped out at the exact second to hit and break off the valve stem. Was running about 75 and thought my air shocks had sprung a leak, then the bike started handling like chit. It was windy as hell and I thought it was just the wind, finally pulled off at the next exit and saw the problem. >:(

Hope you're planning on replacing the rear tire.  I know the plug kit I've got says that it's only a temporary repair and not to drive for more than 250 miles and 55 mph.  I don't have good luck with tires and road hazzards (3 in 6 years) so that's why I have the tire/wheel road hazzard warranty.  Best "policy" I've every bought.  Got it on my new Street Glide too.   :2vrolijk_21:

Unfortunately at times I am a hard head, I have already driven it over 500 miles and did keep it under 70, but I will not press my luck anymore....

I have scheduled it in the shop Tue am  (tommorrow)  Thanks for the advice

We all get that way every now and then...My wife will tell you I'm probably one of the worse for that.   ::)   I just know it's a lot different with MC tires then car/truck tires.  For a couple of hundred, it's not worth risking your neck for a $1.50 plug.  JMO...good call on taking it in.   :2vrolijk_21:
