LOL, there is usually an advertisement before the video on tires. Basically tires have no expiration date yet go bad. At aproxamately 6 years old they start having an issue where the tread comes off the casing which has caused a lot of deaths in cars. You wouldn't stand a chance if it happened on a bike. Tires that are too old are being sold at dealers like Sears. Some found as old as 14 years old being sold as new.

My 2009 HD has tires made the same month as the bike was made. I bought tires online for my other bike that were already two years old when purchased as new.
Example of some tire codes;
231 = made 23 week of 1991 or 17 years old
4302 = 43rd week of 2002 or 6+ years old...

My friend was just telling me yesterday that he bought tires for his bike on Ebay and they were 7 years old.  He wanted to know if it was a problem.  I told him that I wouldn't be real happy with that and I'm glad this video was posted here.  I just forwarded it to him.  He got them from a dealer and he was told that they were still brand new tires and that it wasn't a problem that he should worry about.  I told him that saving a few bucks on tires wasn't the greatest idea, since they are the only thing keeping him in contact with the road.  With as many old tires out there being sold, I'm sure that a problem is the exception, rather than the rule, but I still wouldn't want them on my bike or car.

It depends on how they were stored, but why take the chance... ???

           I gotta to agree with you - saving a few bucks on tires isn't the greatest idea...   ???

So you're saying riding my buddy's '71 Triumph with original tires in the Black Hills wasn't the best idea?

I remember NBC news showing how Chevy trucks blew up, after putting spark plugs in the gas tank.

I take this type of journal with a grain of salt.  OK so after 6 years you can't sell them?  Well how many years can they be on your car?

I believe that tires are better today than in the past, but today nobody takes care of their car, tires included.  That's why they have those stupid tire stems that talk to you.  Now nobody will ever check the air because big brother is already watching the tire pressure.

This one, unlike the exploding trucks, is legit Phil.  My ex-employer, after the fiasco with the tire failures due to a substandard tire design and low inflation pressures on the Explorer, got heavily into tire design and testing rather than just depending on the tire companies to take care of business.  One thing that we determined was that tires do in fact slowly deteriorate even if they are never mounted or used.  It was concluded that after 6 years on the shelf it would be best to not buy a particular tire, and after 8 years it would be best to replace an existing tire even if there is tread remaining.

It would be a good idea if everyone learned how to read the entire DOT code, including the all important manufacturing date.  Just as you probably shouldn't buy food that is well past the "sell by" date, you really shouldn't buy old tires either.  In both instances, fresher is better.
