Quick vs. Power?
« on: May 25, 2005, 01:03:35 AM »

SEEG2, True duals Rhinharts, Race Tuner, Screamin' Eagle breather kit, 6 speed.
Question, have plenty of power, but miss the snap in accelleration that I had in my 95 FLHT with Lienweber E5S, Screamin Eagle Race Iginiton, Super Trapp exhaust, and carb mods.  Like I said, this motor has more power without a doubt, but I miss that neck snapping torque that my old FLHT had.  Any ideas short of changing the ratio of the gearset? [smiley=confused5.gif]  Just had the RT mapped today, and the motor is only at 800 miles, so I am holding judgement till I have over 2k on it.

I'd guess with your current setup that you're about 95HP and 98-100 Torque.  If you really want to put that "neck snapping" into this scoot the quickest way is ported HTCC heads, 10.5 High Comp pistons and 251 cams.  Even if you leave the standard throttle body you'll be jumping to around 119HP and a very similar Torque number.  The 251's lower the max torque curve and I think you'll find they will snap you back in the seat from about 2200 all the way out to 5800 or so.  If you want to take it a step farther, go with the Zippers 53mm throttle body and you can snap yourself right off the back end.  Just my opinion, but this is my favorite setup as I don't run top end very often, but sure do like to get there in a smokin' fashion.  Not many HD's are going to run thru the gears with you with this setup.  Good luck.

BLM I would run the Zippers 50mm throttle body with a 103, when you increase the CI of the engine then you may want to look into running a Zippers 54mm throttle body. Also as far as cam choice I would run anything with a gear drive system. This alone is worth up to 4HP. Zippers has some really good choices with thier brand (red shift cams) very aggressive but also very quite running. S&S, Andrews and Head Quarters also have some very good grinds. I am going to run a Woods cam (now the cat is out of the bag) I chose to go with a lot of lift and a mild duration. I am also going to run a set of modified 103+ heads and a set of 103 10.5 to 1 pistons that are plus .05. I would also change to the Thunder Max ECM. I am going to try this setup in a couple of weeks.

Sounds like your setup will work well, DAWG.  My situation pretty much dictates that I use HD parts all the way through.  I agree, there are several excellent cam manufacturers out there, but I've had some sticky warranty issues when out of the area with mix and match parts.

BLM I understand completly. It is a shame that things are the way they are. Back in the day it never really mattered till the Japs started to copy everything the motor company was about. Then they got HD police on everyone. They still have some good screamin eagle items. I have just never understood why they have not gone to gear driven cams. I think Andrews has the patent on the gear drive system, but I am not sure who makes the SE cams. They have a sweet deal going with jim's I would like to see them do the same with some other manufactures.

Comp Cams are very good quality. I still wish the MOCO would offer gear driven cams for thier SE grinds. Thanks for the info Tater.

no gear drives, they will not meet future EPA noise standards, striker leinweber makes a really nice cam for TC (T5S) that can be installed without needing heavier springs he also makes these cams for gear drive and it will put some more snap in your throttle...

O'Fender....I'm lost, why would you worry about EPA noise standards as an owner as opposed to a manufacturer?

The gear drive set up properly does not make that much noise! As a matter of fact I heard one the other day with a very agressive cam and Jim's lifters that made no noise. So I don't think the noise is an issue. I think the patent on the gear drive system is the issue.
