High idle on start up
« on: June 10, 2009, 12:55:27 PM »

Interesting intermittent problem, on occasion, when I start up first thing in the day the engine will idle up to 1700 RPM and stay high until the engine is completely warmed up, next day, start it up and it idles around 1000 RPM, no noticeable difference in outside temperature. Is this something the TTS Mastertune is doing or is an unrelated problem.

As a side not, this seems to happen at least once a week, but never after the engine has warmed up.

Quite possibly related to the issues H-D has had with the Electronic Throttle Control not setting zero throttle position correctly during shutdown.  There are some threads around here that have discussed this, but I don't remember ever seeing a final "fix" annouced by H-D.

For TBW bikes in general when this happens, the rider has probably revved the engine just as shutting off. It then happens that the higher value is stored and used as "idle" upon re-start. If the situation persists, there is a way to reset the idle. Stop the engine but leave the "run" switch on and then cycle the ignition switch on/off at least 4 times. Supposedly, this "resets" the idle speed back to normal.

Ride safely,
Louis

PS: If you don't do anything, the idle will eventually re-set itself during normal operation of the bike.

Brinks,
I have the TTS too and my bike did the same thing.
Are you using the switch on the Handlebar to turn the engine off?
If so, that is the culprit.  Turn the handlebar switch to run and LEAVE
it there.  Do all your on and off with the keyed ignition switch.
I got that info from Steve Cole and bike runs and idles great now.
How that helps.

Thanks TimBone, seems like the fix, I've been careful not to touch the throttle before turning the run switch off, I'll go with your solution for the time being. :2vrolijk_21:

Great advise.
Leave the handlebar switch alone. It wasn't designed for continuous. More of an emergency kill switch. I have seen 3 year old bikes with intermittent shut off problems after the handlebar switch was worn out from daily use.

Steve, excellent advice and it correlates with what I've found as well.
Shut your scooter down AT IDLE by using the ignition switch.  Leave the switch on the handlebars for the emergency situations.
