Fender bender repairs
« on: June 10, 2008, 12:41:15 AM »

I had a fender bender -- another bike ran into the back end of mine.  The good news -- we we're only going about 25 mph, but we both fell over.  I got a little road rash -- but no serious injury (frankly the helmet helped -- it got a few scratches -- better than my head getting them.

The rear tire of the other bike bent my rear fender pretty well, plus the bike has some scapes in other places.

My question -- when I take the bike to my HD dealer for repairs -- what should I expect on the fender replacement?  Since it is the CVO paint job, does my local deal go to HD and order a new fender, already painted, or do they try to do the painting locally (which I'm concerned about).

Any suggestions or thoughts on getting my SERK put back together so it looks as good as new before I go see the dealer would be appreciated?

Dealer should order new parts painted or chromed for replacement on the bike.  If they do not go to different dealer.  You are the one that should tell the dealer what you wnat ie. replacement not repaint.

The other bike was traveling in reverse?

Some local guys are pretty good at matching and may save you a pile down the road.

Good to hear you are ok... crashes suck at any speed!

Get new parts. No question. You may have to wait but you can ride until the parts arrive.

There's only one option, NEW parts painted by HD.  The color codes are top secret and anything not factory painted (by Calibre) will be an attempted match.  What do you care?  The other guy's insurance is paying for it, that removes your deductible in this case.  It's illegal for the insurance co.'s to dictate what to replace with.  Good luck!

Jim,
It is true that an insurance company can't "dictate" what you replace parts with, but in many cases, the insurance company will only pay for what they want parts replaced with - then you are on your own to pay any difference in $$ for OEM parts.
Fortunately...as far as I know, there are no after-market SE painted parts available.  Dealers & insurance companies know this, so it is never an issue.
It does however become an issue on cars & trucks, since there are several companies making after-market sheet metal parts for most popular vehicles.  Some after-market sheet metal parts are as good or better then OEM, but there are also some after-market sheet metal parts that are pure junk.

If you go to an HD dealership around here for crash repair, there is no repairing of any parts, it's all replacing.  All three of the dealerships that I have bought bikes from around here have that policy.

I am sure that is the case with all Harley dealers.  It would cost more in man-hours and material to repair than it would to replace with a new part.  This is often the case on cars & trucks as well, until you get to a quarter-panel or roof.

Having had my bike get knocked over shortly after joining this site....you just need to have your dealer give you an estimate from replacement parts, which is what thye would probably do anyway.
Your replacement parts are custom paint and VIN code restricted, meaning you have to give Harley the VIN number when you order the parts.
And take the advice I got from some on here....that is if you can remove the damaged parts and bolt on the new ones yourself...get the estimate from your dealer (and they'll use Harley list price) but then order the parts through Chicago HD and save 20%, thereby pocketing the difference and paying yourself for the joy and experience of doing the work yourself.
Depending on the parts you need, expect to wait for them. I ordered an inner fairing a front fender and hard bag on May 13th. The inner fairing showed up last week but I am still on hold for the fender and saddle bag as they are two tone paint (mine is the two tone teal SEEG), the inner fairing was a single color. One color parts may be available quicker but two tone painted parts take longer and unfortunately you're at the mercy of the Harley paint shop for Screaming Eagle two tone painted parts.
The "old guard" on this site have been a great help for me and I'm sure will be for you should you chose to accept this mission... :2vrolijk_21:
