K&n or SE air cleaner
« on: May 20, 2008, 12:15:05 PM »

I have a 07' SE DYNA with 1200 miles and am getting ready to have the new SERT installed and tuned on the dyno for a few hours. The only other mod is Vance and Hines Big Radius 2 into 2 pipes. I was wondering should I install a new K&n air filter element part# hd-0800 before the tune or keep the stock element or possibly something else? Also didn't these bikes come stock with the Screaming Eagle air cleaner or not? Also what type of numbers should I expect with these few mods? Thanks for everyone's help, love the site. Dave

You might want to consider getting SE Stage I A/C to improve HP and Trq.  I know that SE Stage I A/C for 2008 CVOs have different bolt patern and cannot use HD-0800 (I just tried it), but I'm not sure if that's the case with 07 or not. :nixweiss:

I mailed K&N to ask whether it would be useful to replace the stock airfilter on my 2008 CVO with a K&N HD 1499 filter or that I would need a K&N Air Cleaner Kit to make my bike breath a bit better. This is what he answered:

"Thanks for contacting K&N. Your 1800CC Road King has the screaming eagle
kit which requires HD-1508.  Your bike already has the high performance
stage one kit.  Please let me know if you have any other questions."

Stephen Mullen of Nightrider stated more or less the same on the telephone where he said that the 2008 CVO actually already had a quite good air cleaner which does not really need replacement.

Does anybody know whether the K&N guy is right and if this also means that a stage I ECM flash has been carried out, which would mean that the rpm goes to 6200 already?

The SE A/C filter installed on mine fell apart after 3000 miles.  There's a thread about it here somewhere.  If anyone needs a brand new in the box K&N HD-0800, please PM me.  I got one for ya cheaper than you'll pay thru K&N.

Your bike already has the high performance stage one kit.

Not true.  I changed the A/C to SE stage I on my 08 SERK, and if you look at some of the pictures on this site, you'll see that Stage I A/C stands out about 2" more than standard on your bike.
Ans as far as I know, K&N doesn't make filter that fits SE stage 1 on 2008 CVOs (yet).
You can also look at harley part number 29260-08 and compare the back plate with what you have.

Harley installed the SE air cleaner on some models for certain model years only.  The best way to determine what you have is with your own eyes.  If you have a metal back plate and can actually see the filter element, you have the SE air cleaner.  If you have a plastic housing you do not have the SE air cleaner.  And if you have the '07 and earlier SE air cleaner, the K&N HD-0800 filter replacement is a good idea since the original filters tended to disintegrate.  The K&N will probably outlast you, much less your bike.  At this point in time K&N hasn't released a replacement for the '08 SE air filter element, but they do have a a replacement for those with the stock plastic air box.

I had 3 K&N HD-0800 air filters break from metal fatigue and will not use them again.  The vibration from the engine causes a centrifugal like force from engine vibration on the air filter cover and it causes the metal where the cover is connected to the filter to crack and break.  I had to change mine last week while on the road.  The last 3 have lasted about 2k to 4k miles then broke.
