Friend goes down - Wet road
« on: June 10, 2008, 08:57:24 AM »

A friend of mine went down last week in the rain. He rides to work almost ever day regardless of the weather. He was riding toward an intersection and admitted that he was kind of day dreaming because he had been taking the same route ever day. Came up to a red light touched the brakes on the wet crown of the road and the bike went right out from under him.

He said that his jacket saved his elbow and back as he slid into the intersection. Luckily there wasn't any traffic coming in the other direction, it was about 5:30am. He picked up the bits and pieces of the bike that were scatted on the road. The bike was still ridable and rode the rest of the way to work and then rode the bike home.

He is fine and fixed the bike enough to continue to ride it to and from work again, daily.

I catch myself wandering from time to time, try to vary my route from time to time (terrorists you know  :huepfenjump3:) luckily have not had such an abrupt wake up!

glad to hear he is good to go!

Glad to hear he is OK.  We tend to be creatures of habit and ride the same way all the time and it's easy get in a rut and zone out.

Sorry to hear about your friend, and glad it was only minor injuries. Thanks for the reminder to always ride expecting the unexpected.

a few years ago i made the mistake of tapping my rear breaks while entering a rotary on wet pavement, i was lucky enough to feel the rear end start to break loose and get off the breaks. i was then dumb enough to try the same trick again. and again i was lucky enough to save it.

good riding skills can get you out of trouble but not paying attention to whats going on can get you into trouble

I often go to this topic before I go riding on weekends. It really keeps me grounded and aware of what can happen
