Handlebar Change Help?
« on: July 17, 2008, 01:22:52 PM »

Ok, doing a handlebar change on my 08 SEUC.  Wow, what a mess of wires.  I got it all apart last night.

I need some guidance from someone that has taken the plugs apart and removed the wires from the plugs.  I might eventually figure it out, but thought getting advise, tips, and instruction from those that have been there and done it would be wise (and I would rather not screw up anything)

There are release tools available at most decent parts store for lots of the factory style connectors.  You sometimes have to kind of learn a feel for where and how to push.  But they actually work ok.  Sometimes a very small blade (or ground down) ignition screw driver is adequate too.

Another option would be what several have reported doing previously.  You've done all the hard work so far.  Now just drop the bars off at the dealership and ask them to disassemble the plug(s).  It'll be a quickie for them.  Just draw yourself a diagram before you leave it with them.

Actually seriously considering the dealer option.  And, already drawn the diagram so I can double check the wires.  Only problem is I'm not a very patient person.  Both dealers here are telling me it could be a week or two before they could get to it. :(
I'm checking other options also.

And BTW, I assume that the HD Ironside heated grips will work with the Wild1 575 handlebars?

That's insane.  That should be one of those five-minute-over-coffee tasks that any shop gets stuck with to help someone out.

If you know anyone at a car dealership or other decently equipped garage ask them.  Similar type connectors in many places.

Didn't notice that before.  Work?  Yes.  The question will be how long.

Harley's grips don't have a good reputation.  Very prone to failure.  If you've not already bought the HD product at least consider an aftermarket product called Heat Demons.  Available from Kurykakyn though often cheaper on eBay.  Several here did a group buy of this product quite some time ago.  They have worked well.

Yep, I've read about the heated grip problems.  Thanks for the advise, the bike already has the HD heated grips.  I will hopefully re-use the HD grips and if they fail in the future let warranty take care of it.

Just a note of caution here. As soon as you change the bars, that will more than likely be enough ammunition for the dealer to deny waranty claim on your grips. Because of course you pinched a wire or somehow effed them up swapping the bars.

Just had hd dude "Jim" install the 575 bars and the Heat Demons as my HD heated grips were down to only working on high only. Anyway I am very happy with the Heat Demons as I can feel them working right off low and the switch with the lights is much easier to use than twisting the end of the grip. And the bars are a great improvement, much better feel and riding position. :2vrolijk_21:

I put the Wild 1 Chubby 575's on my '06 SE Ultra a year ago and they are great.  Any time someone sits on my bike they always remark right away how good the bars feel.  I have the HD delaer do the work and it got kind of spendy but well worth it in the long run.

There is a tutorial or two on line about changing out the bars.  I had them bookmarked but they are on my home computer and can't get at them.  I'd just start disassemblying the plugs and pulling wires as long as you have an accurate diagram.  I used a small flat blade screwdriver to release the wires.  It's actually easier than it looks.  No need for the dealer, if I can do it anyone can.
