2001 SERG engine problem
« on: July 19, 2008, 03:32:12 AM »

Has anyone had any rod bearing problems? Are there any problem trends out there? My engine is making some kind of internal noise without any loss of power. Has anyone else had this problem? Any thoughts or solutions out there? Thanks in advance.

Cam chain tensioners are the only "routine" failure I've really heard about with these bikes. :nixweiss:  I think some early 2000s had cam bearing issues, too, but you should be safe from that.  Could possibly be the compensator?

How about some more information like when does it happen, what does it sound like, where on the motor is it coming from, etc.  Also, how many miles on the bike?

How many miles on the clock?
A rod bearing problem would typically be heard when under load such as light accelleration whereas the tensioners if bad can be heard at any rpm.

I had a knocking sound in the lower end on my FLTRSE2 at 28,000 miles...thought the same as you.  Turned out to be the compensator nut wasnt tight enough after having work done at the dealer for a new stator.  No loss in performance and good oil pressure. If you had anything done on the lower end...may be the same problem.  The sound is just like a bearing knock.

Rod play is side to side.

The fisrt thing I did was go through the primary side. I too had my stator go out at 28K. Wish the problem was on that side....
