Clutch Engagement
« on: June 10, 2005, 01:50:34 PM »

How far off the grip is the clutch supposed to engage?  (Hydraulic, '05 SEEG).  Mine is about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch off the grip when it starts to engage and I'm wondiering if I need to bleed...

Haven't found a spec for that it any of the manuals; all I can say is that mine originally released at maybe 1/10th of an inch from the grip, which made shifting damn near impossible.  After bleeding 3 times, it now has between 1/2" and 3/4" depending on the temperature of the clutch.  There is a spec for how much travel you should get at the clutch pushrod/throwout bearing - I believe it is 1.65 mm minimum.

My experience is very close to grc's. Warmer makes it better. Several bleedings by the dealer and that's what I've got.

See attachment from the FLHTCSE2 service manual supplement.  This is all H-D has to say on the subject in any of the manuals I've looked at.
Basically, if the travel at the release bearing/pushrod meets the minimum spec of .065 inches, everything is OK.  The engagement point at the hand lever is a function of the master and slave cylinder sizes along with the lever ratio, and if there is no air in the system, what you've got is what you're gonna get.  The hydraulic system is superior for effort and maintenance, but I do miss the ability to tweak the engagement point  that I had on the cable system.

I have noticed that I basically have to keep the lever crushed against the grip at a stop sign to keep the engine from lugging - much different from the cable on the '02 Electra Glide Classic I had before.  Thanks for the information on bleeding the system.  Sounds like it may help, if only a little.

One more thing to think about for anyone with the hydraulic clutch - if you replace the hand grips, do not go with larger diameter grips.  I have heard of folks doing this and then having insufficient lever travel to get the clutch to release completely.

Doh!   I can vouch for this being a problem!!! Back to the stock grips now, which seems to work fine!  [smiley=furious.gif]

My clutch engagement is great, and I am running the oversized bar and sheild heated grips.  No problem with travel at all.
