Riders Backrest
« on: August 02, 2008, 11:54:08 AM »

I'm a Newbie with a problem.  I'm 6'3" and would like riders backrest on when I take longer trips.  I have a SERK4 and when I use the backrest my bits are near resting on the tank.  With the backrest removed I sit back further and am much more comfortable.  Is there anyway to modify or adjust the bracket under the seat that will allow the backrest stem to stand more upright or is it simply a case of ditching the backrest.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PJM check your manual you can adjust the backrest independent of bracket mount adjustment. and welcome to the site  :2vrolijk_21:

Tried that.  It tilts the backrest cushion but not back far enough.  On the mounting bracket I tried to put washers under the forward holes but as it raises the front it lowers the rear of the bracket which in turn only buggers up the fender.

Welcome to the site from SC !!!

I had to go to the 3-way adjust on the fly backrest from HD because the one that came with the bike is a POC.  My new one is quickly removable and fits fine.  I don't need but one position though.  It's a little overkill and expensive but WTH.

Looking at the 09 P&A Catalog Page 382, they have redesigned all the backrests.  Look wider and less like a lollipop.

Pillow-Look Style Adjustable Rider Backrest

Add support for the long haul. With one quick pull from the integrated gas spring, you can instantly adjust the riding position through a 30-degree range. The backrest pad features a sleek shape that provides full lower back support without pushing the rider forward, and a slim profile that offers the passenger a few more inches of space. The backrest features a pull knob activated, five-position 1.5" height adjustment. The backrest can be easily removed, and folds down to allow easier passenger mounting.

Welcome to the site,
Many riders switch over to other brands of seats as well. I think you find not the back rest giving you problems but the seat too. Many people just get rid of the seat all together and combo the back rest and seat. Unfortunately, my funds don't allow me to do that just yet. Look at Black Diamond seat from C & C custom seats from Cali I think you will enjoy the merchandise.

The seat I find very comfortable, unlike my old Road King, which I had to modify significantly. Only problem is rider backrest pushing me forward. I think I will try one of the improved 09 versions.  Thanks.
