The first accident reported by the DPS occurred about 12:11 a.m. Sunday. Gene McRae, 42, of Gillette, Wyo., pulled into the wrong lane of S.D. Highway 34 from 131st Street in Sturgis and was struck by a motorcycle driven by 58-year-old Robert Castle of Crosslake, Minn.
Castle suffered serious injuries and was transported to Sturgis Regional Hospital.
McCrae, who was driving a Mercury Cougar, is charged with driving under the influence and driving on the wrong side of the road.
Sunday’s second serious accident occurred at 6:33 p.m. near Spearfish. Dora Estrada, 57, of Belle Fourche was traveling on U.S. Highway 85 in a Ford Taurus when she attempted to make a lane change to turn onto St. Onge Road. Estrada’s vehicle was struck from behind by a motorcycle driven by David Daniels, 45, of Powhatan, Va., according to DPS reports.
Daniels suffered serious injuries and was transferred to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition early Monday evening.
An Indiana man suspected of being impaired by drugs was injured in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 90 near mile marker 56. An investigation is continuing into the crash of 49-year-old Craig Kaufman of Martinsville, Ind. Kaufman was in critical condition at Rapid City Regional Hospital Monday evening.
Other reported crashes:
* At about 7 p.m. Sunday, Denver resident Steven Streeter, 66, was driving a motorcycle north on U.S. Highway 85 near mile marker 35 when he pulled into the passing lane and was struck from behind by motorcyclist Timothy Miller of Forest Lake, Calif. Miller, 65, suffered a broken leg in the crash.
* Motorcyclist Larry Vanbelois, 51, of Alberta, Canada, failed to negotiate a turn and struck a guardrail in an unspecified location. A piece of guardrail flew into the road and was struck by a motorcycle driven by 61-year-old Terry Woodfin of Alexander City, Ala. A passenger on the Vanbelois motorcycle, 56-year-old Beatrice Mason of Halifax, suffered a broken leg. The others suffered minor injuries.
