Now I'm Concerned! Help!
« on: July 14, 2008, 07:59:24 AM »

I was reading some of the posts and it made my stomach sick regarding the 110... Here's why, I own a 2007 FXSTC with a 110 kit and just bought my father a 08 flstsb and had the 110 kit put in there and took delivery saturday.

My question is are the 110 failures folks are experiencing only on the SE factory bikes or any of the 110 kits installed in regular 96 inch bikes? I'm very concerned that I just made a very costly mistake. Please advise. Many thanks.

I have heard of a couple of failures with the early builds as they used the same gaskets, jugs, torque specs, as us 07 owners have. The newer builds should be using the the new parts and will maybe be less problematic. However, we all have the same jugs which are still prone to liner slipage.

My 07 was done in July of 07 so hopefully it will be ok. I have 2800 miles on it but was planning to ride to sturgis from NH and was a little concerned. What is linear slippage? Thank you for your help.

In July 2007, Harley was using the 16801-07A gasket. This gasket wasn't great. In April 2008, the latest gasket, 16801-07B was released and has done a much better job at keeping the oil on the inside.

The failure point isn't the gasket, but the liners in the cylinders. They move. The previous gaskets could not overcome this movement and started to leak. It's not really the fault of the gasket, they just weren't able to cover up the problems with the cylinders, which are the real culprits. The 07B gasket is squishier where it counts and does a better job of maintaining a seal when the liners move just a little. If the liners really move, then this gasket will not be able to keep it sealed up and it too will leak.

Gaskets are cheaper than cylinders, so guess what gets redesigned to cover up a problem with the other?

My neighbor's 110 kit started leaking at 5000 miles, nearly stranded him coming back from Florida.  It's not only the factory bikes.

Have met 2 people recently, both bikes were 96" from the factory and dealer upgraded to the 110 kits.  One had already had the leak and the 2nd poor guy I showed him his leak.   Would have to say it is not isolated to just Screaming Eagles.

My Dyna with the dealer installed 110 has been in Two times with leaks for repair and after the 2nd repair it started leaking for the third time with only 38 miles post repair. All three times the leak was at the O rings and I had one bad head gasket leak. I am just driving it, wiping it off and adding oil as needed. No need to bring it in again until thay have a real fix.

Well none of this sounds good to me. I hope I have not just made a costly mistake in buying a 2008 Screamin Eagle Springer. I have not even got the bike here yet most of what I read about is problems. Wish I had a found this website before buying the bike.
