My 07 was done in July of 07 so hopefully it will be ok. I have 2800 miles on it but was planning to ride to sturgis from NH and was a little concerned. What is linear slippage? Thank you for your help.
In July 2007, Harley was using the 16801-07A gasket. This gasket wasn't great. In April 2008, the latest gasket, 16801-07B was released and has done a much better job at keeping the oil on the inside.
The failure point isn't the gasket, but the liners in the cylinders. They move. The previous gaskets could not overcome this movement and started to leak. It's not really the fault of the gasket, they just weren't able to cover up the problems with the cylinders, which are the real culprits. The 07B gasket is squishier where it counts and does a better job of maintaining a seal when the liners move just a little. If the liners really move, then this gasket will not be able to keep it sealed up and it too will leak.
Gaskets are cheaper than cylinders, so guess what gets redesigned to cover up a problem with the other?
