Inexpensive GPS on SERK
« on: August 27, 2008, 10:23:12 AM »

I purchased a Garmin NUVI 750 for the car and wanted to try it on the Road King. This unit was only about $250. It is not waterproof and may not take excessive vibes but I have had no problems at all. I machined on the lathe a ball bearing type mount that fit the receiver supplied in the GPS kit. Then TIG welded that to a stainless rod and tab drilled to fit the windshield bolt. I wired it to a removable lighter plug through the aux switch which is standard on the 2003 SERK. The entire package can be removed with the windshield by disconnecting a simple 2 prong plug or you can leave the base and snap off the GPS only. If it rains, I quick snap off the GPS and place in the trunk or cover with a plastic bag. Not as nice as the Zumo but less than 1/3 of the cost and can switch back and forth to the car/truck. I have been using this setup for about 3 months and had zero problems. The lighter plug is also available for charging a cell phone or any other DC device.

I think that you have a better mounting idea than the manufactures have. NICE JOB.  KB

I like the clean handle bar all in chrome on my '07 SERK. Hence I decided to forgo the visual part of the GPS device and installed the unit (I use a TomTom Rider) in the saddle bag. I only use the voice commands, via a bluetooth scala rider. Works very well. I know that the combination of screen and voice is better, but this is a case of function follows form. Obviously anyone who wishes to use a non-waterproof unit could do the same, provided it suppports bluetooth headsets.
