Broken Fairing Support Bracket
« on: August 13, 2007, 05:37:53 PM »

In another thread I saw a request for a pic of an L shaped bracket used to repair a broken fairing support.  One of mine broke and the attached pics show how I repaired it.  L bracket purchased at local hardware store.  I cut it to suit and drilled one hole.  Works great and stronger than new.  Hope this helps anyone looking for a simple, cheap and effective repair without having to replace the entire bracket (which will probably break again anyway).

From what little can be seen of the tank in the avatar the bike is an 04 Orange and Black.  So likely out of warranty.  That notwithstanding, why trust the dealer for such a simple improvement that the dealer himself would have to tear so much more apart for and charge a significant labor bill for?

Can't speak for the owner, but since the bike is an '04 if it doesn't have the extended warranty this would not be a warranty fix, so it would have been a paid repair. I think the owner was showing us alternative ways to fix this problem should it occur outside of warranty.

My brothas dOOd and 2Lane hit the nail on the head, my bike is an '04 and long out of warranty and I was showing all an alternative fix/repair for a fairly common problem due to a defective factory design.  Even if the bike were under warranty, I would have fixed it this way myself as the dealer would have probably screwed something else up replacing the bracket.

I'm the guy who started the original thread last year but never got around to posting a picture of the "fix".  Thanks for the pic Pete.  Very similar to the bracket I fabricated on mine.

The reason I didn't have the dealer fix mine, which was still in warranty at the time, is fairly obvious once you realize what has to come apart to replace the bracket.  Harley doesn't pay a dealer to come up with creative fixes like this one, they pay to replace the defective part.  In this case, that means totally removing the inner and outer fairing, sound system, etc.  I do not trust my dealer to change the windshield, much less mess with all that other stuff.  Every time I've let the dealer touch my bike, I've wound up with more problems than I started out with.  So by fixing little things like this myself, I save multiple trips to the dealer (and a possible murder charge).  Besides, after looking at the way the bracket was made I would bet a new one would break again in the same spot.  It definitely won't break now.

I pulled the whole bracket to replace it previously, and when I found out it was $100 I got it welded instead.

Weld broke and I used this fix... works great!

The speaker brackets can be welled and work great too!
