Electrical Gremlin after repair - any ideas?
« on: October 03, 2008, 09:31:05 PM »

Recently had a roller conversion done on my FLTRSEI2 at the dealer.  After riding the bike about 100 miles the speedo went a little whacky.  I'd seen this before when the stator went bad (speedo, no cruise, blinkers won't canx, etc.).  I knew this because I replaced it aobut 5k ago.  After dark I found that when the speedo goes, the instrument light for the speedo went out and the radio went weak.  When it recovered after about 2 minutes all was well again.  This occurred about 3 times in 20 miles.  I plan to start checking electrical connections starting at the battery - has anyone "seen" this and/or have suggestions?

thanks in advance,

I had a similar event happen on my 03 Road Glide. First check you battery connections and then the battery itself. It may not be charging properly.

Also look for loose or corroded grounds

Thanks Geezer Glide and Erniezap for your input and suggestions.  This problem as I indicated appeared after I'd put about 100 miles on the bike after the repair so perhaps it is just the connections at the battery are loose - although I have suspected awhile now that the battery might be getting towards end of life.

Cheers,

Blue

Thanks everyone for your input.  I cleaned both battery terminals and all connectors, checked for pinched wires, etc. and took Mad Brad's advice to check the plug into the speedo which did click-in when I pushed it.  I rode it about 50 miles in the beautiful weather this PM and it was just fine.

thanks again,
