Big inch 117+ twin cam engines?? Lets talk!
« on: September 28, 2008, 01:44:09 PM »

Well guys, the decision has been made... I am going big this winter!!
Anyone with 117 or bigger twin cams, I would like your input.(Bagger/touring riders especially)

What combinations are working for you?
Can you get big low end torque?
How about rideability and fuel mileage?
How do they start - Still blow smoke out the A/C and make that wonderful grinding sound?

Who's heads?
Cams?
Compression?
Pistons?
Exhaust?

I have been talking to a few builders and they all say they can give me the results I am looking for.....Been down that road before....
I will be doing the usual crank repairs(maybe upping the game with a longer arm) and tapered bearing modification.

How about it guys? Lets hear first hand reports on how your rig runs!!

Afraid I 'm still on the 110 but I remember seeing some guys with 117 Jims and Zippers (I think) on the site so you should get the answers you want.

Good luck anyway.

Igo,
Talk to Ken (Hogbreath).  He dropped a JIMS 120 into his 07 SEUC.  He can probably answer some, if not all of your questions.

Igofar,

I started with an S&S 124"
Cycle Rama did the heads, S&S Pistons, Custom Cam by Cycle Rama, HorsePower Inc 62mm Throttlebody, Baker R2 Tranny, Rivera Pro Clutch and Aim VP92T.

Avg around 40 - 42 mpg even with playing
Starts easily has the S&S auto compression releases
Heavy Belt
Standard motor gearing 315
River Pro Clutch
S&S adjustables
S&S Roller Rockers
S&S Lifters
Rings were custom per Cycle Rama
10.8 to 1

Bike runs good whether it is daily ride or longer hauls and is very smooth.   Engine puts out 147 torque / 143 hp.

Haven't blown smoke out of the air cleaner yet (knock on wood)

Depending on the numbers you are after you might consider a whole motor swap and depending on the year of the bike if 07 or newer than Jim's 120 or 131 out of the box if 2000-2006 might consider an S&S.

Skyhook,
You forgot to add   IMO to your post.

I'd debate most of the above with you, but I've got a feeling I'll need to take a number

Lots of members running anybody but what you've got listed above and getting great results

I believe you'd be hard put to beat Harry's (Unbalanced) combination

Just my opinion of course  ;)

I like this forum and have learned a lot here...have also learned a lot at places like harley tech talk and v-twin forum...just listing some popular choices and I'm sure I've left many great builders/suppliers out

Well, from mainly a VTF'er here...

I have a 117 in my 05 Classic. Its nothing but fun. I contacted Scott at Hillside cycle last year about this build and i now have almost 5 k on it.
My build is:
Hillside cycle Stage 2.5 heads with 1.94 intakes
Bob Woods 200psi springs
S+S Roller rockers and adj pushrods
Axtell 117 cyl kit with flattop pistons (approx 11.4 to 1 compression)
Woods TW9BG cams
S/E billet cam plate and oil pump(with LMR#2 spring)
CV51 mm carb with Tman S+S modded intake
Woods air filter..
TP rocker boxes
337 gearing with 24 tooth solid sprocket
D+D fatcat with perf baffle
DTT ignition
Rivera proclutch with VPC on top....

I am not trying to advertize, just list what i have and express how happy i am with this motor. Even though its high compression i never had a pinging problem at all. It starts every time, just like it pulls the font wheel ever time. Just like it will run as cool as a 103 bike.........

You may recognize me from other sites...

Thanks DSM...

That is the kind of first hand experience I am looking for..
Scott at Hillside seems to have a good reputation as far as I can see and his name keeps popping up the more I search!!

Good looking list of parts.. I am considering something similar in the off season.

Starts good, runs good, what more can a guy ask for... 'cept maybe 40+mpg!!
Did Hillside assemble it for you?

No Hillside did not assemble it for me. I run a small repair shop and i just planned the build with Scott and had him work the heads and do the timken conversion, case boring and machine work. I may be called a liar by some but 40mpg is an easy task with a bigger motor. It takes a lot less throttle input to keep speed on the highway than say a 88-96-103 motor would. I have gotten the best of 47 mpg riding a constant 68-70 mph on a couple of occaisons. I usually ride faster than that an since i am also carbed my mileage suffers. I ride a lot locally and my mileage is usually in the high 30's...

Yes Scott does have a great rep as well. Whether you do a build with him or another vendor, make sure your goals are met. If you want gooooobbss of low end tq, you can have that. The TW8 cam from woods is also a wild 117. You could also go with a 9f cam, a 2 inch intake valve and a boarzilla and have that thing setting records at the track too. I love the 117 setup as its not a radical stroke or bore and can be made to do whatever you want.  I am just usuing Wood's cam as an example there are a bunch others out there, but Woods give a bit extra yank factor IMO. There really is a ton of options out there for the big motors now. Just make sure you look at the whole picture.Dony kill all the power you pay for with parts that should not be on the bike....

IMHO if you are looking for some one who has a great rep and won't break you wallet. Wes Brown at Cycle-Rama in Fla. He has done some work for me in the past and I am very pleased with him. I have also used Zippers in the past as well. You will get personlized service from Wes and his wife Pam. You will also get some very good numbers out of Wes.

Had a neighbor (since moved) who bought a 124" S&S. He had it disassembled and sent the entire top end to Dave Mackie with the only instructions being he wanted the baddest motor in SoCal. I can't tell you what that motor had in it, but I saw the dyno sheets and both numbers were in the 160's. The bike would break the rear tire loose going down the road in 3rd gear just by twisting the throttle. I raced the guy out in the Anza-Borrego desert when I had my 05 SEVROD and I got the jump on him by being in 3rd when he was in 5th. By the time he caught me I had the SEVROD pegged at 10k and 150mph. He blew by me like I'd stopped. That bike easily topped 170. Fast forward , last I heard, he lost it in a curve and did the kid with a stick on a picket fence routine on a guardrail at 100+. Didn't go down buy chewed up one side of the bike and his leg real bad. Big dog rule #1  Play Hard, Die Hard
Anyway, my point is that no matter what you buy for a motor to start with, there's always more horses to be gotten out of it. You want the biggest, buy the biggest. You want the baddest, buy the biggest and go to work on it.
