2005 Road King Intermittent starting problem
« on: September 15, 2008, 12:41:51 PM »

One of my close friends has a 2005 FI Road King with a Power Commander.  A few times last year, on a ride, the motor would crank and not start.  If it sat for 10-15 minutes it would restart.  Apparently yesterday he had to get the trailer to bring it home.  Of course when he go back, it started up.  I'm going to check for a historical code in the ECM, as I am thinking it is a flaky sensor.  He wonders if the PC could be the issue, but i don't think the PC could be that heat sensitive since it is not near anything that hot.  It's very intermittent.
Ideas?

Absolutely yes, but where it seems to be heat related I tend to think of something else.  We can disconnect the PC, but that would need to be done while it is experiecing the no start condition.

O2 sensor problem?...The kid that detailed the dyna last weekend pushed the wire onto the pipe, I did not notice a sped off.  It does not look burned through but it has been harder starting..I dunno, just throwing stuff out there...Check for resistance, open loops n such..

I haven't had any problems with sensors on my bike, but have had my share of experience with bad sensors on cars and trucks. The cam and crank sensors can cause a problem just like your stating. Bad point is there will be no error code, if either of these sensors are going they just don't sense the crank or cam spinning, this is not an error to the ECU, so no code. When they don't sense the motor turning over you don't get spark or fuel, at least that's the way it works on the cages, might just check to see if any sensors are loose first.

Update:
In this case just the crank sensor, I make sure it tight, if so I'd check for errors, if none I'd look at replacing the crank sensor. If he have a real good buddy with a bike you might be able to try his sensor!  ;)

No o2 sensors on 2005.  So many things to check especially when its running ok.  There's always the wiggle test.

Wiggle test is good..Fuel pressure adequate, beer cold...

It was the Power Commander.  It is on it's way back to them for analysis /repair.
