2009 FLHTCUSE4 catalytic converter?
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:54:25 PM »

OK I have a question.

My 2009 FLHTCUSE4,

Why does it have a catalytic converter?

Page #29 of the FLHTCUSE4 owners manual clearly states,

"All Custom Vehicle Touring motorcycles manufactured for international and California markets have a catalytic
converter in the exhaust pipe collector."

If I understand that correctly, I would think that means that every one produced for markets other than international and California do not have catalytic converters.

There is catalytic converter in the collector area of my bike.

The reason I ask is because of the gas situation here, , , or the lack of premium gas.

I have almost 500 miles on the bike and it has only had regular in it.

Thankfully it hasn't been hot and I haven't got in heavy traffic but I have found no premium.

I keep 110 octane in a tank and have plenty of it for the other bikes.

The problem is leaded 110 and catalytic converters do not mix.

Once someone makes an exhaust system for the bike all is good.

But until then, 89 octane sucks in a new bike. (even with octane booster)

Another moco mystery?

Not really a mystery, the MoCo has a long standing habit of failing to proofread their spec sheets, owner manuals, shop manuals, etc.

What it should have said was that all big twin models for the international market, the California market, and the CVO 110's have a catalytic converter.  The 49 state TC96 bikes do not.

Chip, do you really care if your catalytic converter gets coated with lead and ceases to function?  How will anyone know, short of a tailpipe sniffer test?  It won't "plug up" like some wives tales would have us believe.  That goes all the way back to the first cats in cars, and if the mixture got too rich or you had a repetitive misfire the cat could get hot enough to melt the substrate and that would in fact plug up the unit.  Lead just coats the surface and shuts down the reaction with the exhaust gases, thus increasing the emissions.

My Dad refused to pay extra for unleaded gas when he got his '77 Chrysler.  Only took about 6 months before the car wouldn't go above 50 mph and could barely climb a hill.  He had a shop buddy cut out the converter and weld a straight pipe in it's place and all was well.  It was nearly plugged completely.  I'd put the highest octane no lead available in and deal with pinging until aftermarket pipes are available.

That's very interesting. If I understand it correctly, the catalytic converter is in the "1" part of the new "2-1-2" exhaust. With this in mind, would it make sense to switch that piece on a 110 with the same part from a 96? Or is that technically not possible?
