Seat scratching fender
« on: November 19, 2008, 02:19:23 AM »

How do you prevent replacement seats from scratching the rear fender? I know of the 3M product, but the problem I have is that once its on it stays on. Im looking for something that I can put on and take off when I'm ready to switch back to my stock seat when I ride solo. Any suggestions?

On my Fat Boy I had the same problem with the solo seat.I Put felt on the bottom of the solo where it meets the paint & never had a problem. THE MUFFMAN

Yea, I was seeing some smudge wear on my rear fender after installing my Corbin Touring seat. I placed a folded diaper between the seat and fender which should solve that problem.

Might try those stick on rubber pads that you put on the back of cabinet doors.

Microfiber towel under the seat.

Cautionary note:  placing the protective material of your choice (felt, tape, little rubber feet, etc.) on the seat may not eliminate the paint damage.  If the seat still moves slightly, the so-called protective material can still grind any dust and dirt particles into the paint.  It is much more effective to place any protective material directly on the paint and let any scuffing from vibration or relative motion take place on the underside of the seat.  Just use something designed for paint protection, like the 3M material, and peel it off when you swap seats.

Ditto what Jerry said. I use the 8 mil 3M tape, specifically designed for paint protection. I goes on and comes off easily. It's a little pricey, I think a roll of 2 inch tape is around $30, but it is good stuff.

Agreed. Stick whatever protection to the fender, not the seat.

Is this stuff available at automotive paint stores? I've been to some of the small auto parts stores, (Napa, Kraggen etc..) they don't carry this stuff.

3M doesn't consider their Scotchgard Paint Protection Film to be a consumer item so you won't find it on display at a typical auto parts store.  Try local body shop supply stores, or check out some sites on the internet.  One such place that sells small quantities is http://www.shop.protint.com/main.sc , they have strips as small as 2 inches by a few feet long.

You might want to check with theHD dealer.  My Deuce had it already on the bike and cut to cover the curved surface without wrinking.  It doesn't look bad with the solo seat, or you can get a fender bib and not worry at all.  We SERK3 owners have to cover up the lack of graphics when a solo seat is on.

I have an '08 SERK and have done a lot of riding with the stock seat.  I ride mainly two up and we're both a bit above average in weight.  Fluffy as my wife might say.

On the bottom rear of the seat is the attaching tab and it's held on with two hex head 1/4"x20 bolts.  The bolts are not flat on top but have the ridge around the hex and are slight relieved inside that edge inward.  This leaves a cookie cutter type top surface on the two bolts.  The two bolts have actually dented the top of the fender and left the impression of the bolt top into the paint.

I'll get pictures this weekend, but what I did, unfortunately after the fact, was remove the two hex head bolts and use my countersink and installed flat head bolts instead of the hex head bolts.  Just for good measure, I added a thin rubber bumper over the head of one of the flat heads as a spacer to keep the metal attachment tab from rubbing the fender.

I have bought a new Sundowner seat and that seat is doing what everyone here is complaining about, it's scuffing the clearcoat and will eventually be so bad it would be able to be rubbed out.  I'll get some of the peel and stick clear film and install it.  The only problem with that is that the rear of the seat is considerably wider than the stock SERK seat.  When I install the clear film it will show when I switch back to the stock seat.  I guess if I do this just right, it won't look too bad.

Has anyone else had issues with the attachment bracket bolts hitting the top of the rear fender?
