It broke :huepfenlol2: .

Ok, a bit more than that obviously.  Weird thing is that it never made an unexpected sound until it turned loose.  Then going about 45 on a little country road not under acceleration or load there was a sudden snap and it locked up.  Solid.  Enough of a lock up to flat spot the back tire.

Never did know what the first failure was.  Guess is a cage on a bearing on the mainshaft that was broken and dropped needles everywhere.  But it was just a guess.  Too much damage in it to know for sure.

By looking at the photos there is a lot of wear on the teeth as they are sharp and pitted I would say that happened first, I have seen this before several times in truck transmissions and other equipment the trucks it happened once when the drain plug fell out but most of the failures we had that looked like your gears were because there was water in the oil so lack of lubrication and accelerated wear which makes filings which goes through the bearings then they come apart and of course take the chunks out of the end of the teeth. On this one It looks like you were using the red line shock proof gear oil, but it doesn't look like any water or it would be white. Hmm it would be good to know the real failure for sure, how long ago did this happen?

Damn, 2Lane, I never imagined you being harder on a tranny than Ol' Hub, but I guess I stand corrected.  Sure hope mine don't lock up at 100+ MPH!  That would be BIG, and bad, for Ol' Hub's loved ones.  :'( Guess I'll get my chit checked out this winter.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

Just a thought, but why is it that Harley riders complain about the exhaust being too quiet, and at the same time complain about the engine and the transmission being too noisy?  Do you suppose the whole loud exhaust thing came about because everyone was trying to cover up all those agricultural implement noises from the powertrain?

Buy some good earplugs, or just do like Hub and Hoist and ride fast enough to outrun the noise.

Traany noise may indicated things wearing or breaking , exhaust is normal.

Lucas gear oil 80 / 90 in winter or redline will stop the noise.

Ok how many miles on it what kind of oil were you using all the regular stuff

20k; give or take a little.  Always had the good Redline oil.  So nothing there.  Sometimes things just break.  That one did.
