awful noise
« on: June 15, 2010, 12:10:46 PM »

I have a 2009 ultra and sometimes when I start the bike an awful sound is heard ( not from the exhaust) the bike eventually starts and everything is OK, it normally happens when I first start the bike in the morning but not allways.

it  like a grinding sound. any words of advice would be helpful

New starter most likely.  Pretty common problem.  These things seem to eat starters.  I'm on my third on my '07.

Sounds like the starter maybe failing as ultrafxr stated, but when you start the bike make sure you are in neutral (don't just pull in the clutch while in gear) and make sure your battery is fully charged (I found that keeping battery hooked up to a battery tender nightly really helps).

I have been doing a lot of research on this as I'm having the same problem on my 2008 SERK. Brought it to a local guy who told me he wanted to look at the starter first, start with the obvious he said. He pulled it out and one of the gears was stripped. Had it rebuilt, put it in and the same thing happemed! I had originally brought it to him to have him change the ACR's so I said ok, lets now do the ACR's.

We pull it apart and he decides to test the ACR's that are in it on a battery and they work fine, he tests the new ones and they work too. He then says I have a wiring problem. When you push the start button my bike loses its ground. Unplug the PCIII USB and run it off the factory computer and it starts fine.

I made a post about this and only got one response but it turned out to be a good one, seems as if some power commanders were shipped without the ACR circuits in them. I called powercommander and they told me to ship it to them and they will check it out. If they are not in there they will put them in free of charge. So after Laconia I'm going to ship it to them and see what happens.

If its not fixed then I'm going to have to wait and see what the 2011's look like :drink: ;D

If you have a CVO 110 Motor, make sure the ACRs are enabled...when you have a race tuner installed, the mechanic has to re-enable the ACRs....

Had similiar issues when starting my 2008 SE Ultra.....sounded like the engine was going to come apart....chewed up two starters....ACRs were not enabled!!!!  Finally fixed and she starts up great every time.

My 08 SEUC is starting to make "that" noise.  The mechanic at the dealer thought it might be the stater clutch.  He told me to keep it pluged in for the time being until I have time to bring it in.  Can he check the ACR's to see if they are enabled fairly simple or is it a major job?

p.s. I'm glad I got the extended warranty!

Verifying the ACR's are working is a very simple job...just a few minutes actually.  Your noise is very likely the starter clutch...

My '08 SEUC used to do the same thing, in the mornings, or when I haven't started the bike for awhile. Dropped my bike off at the dealer asking them to look at the problem. Went to pick my bike up when it was ready, looked at the receipt to see what the problem was and it said, "Startup Tables" .. Never had anymore problems with it since. Mine would sound like I was thumbing the starter button on my old '82 Shovel occasionally. Mine has been fine, since they looked at it and did whatever they had to do to it..... JohnT.

Starter clutch. Have them check the ring gear also. I'm on my 2nd ring and pinion gear and third starter clutch on my '07
