SERG Transmission Leak and Fly-By-Wire Throttle Problems
« on: October 12, 2008, 10:19:27 PM »

I was out for a ride today with our HOG chapter and at the first stop about 1 hour into the ride I noticed a puddle of oil below my bike...damn (approx. 800 miles on the odometer). I got down on the ground and it looked like the transmission was leaking oil and spray was all over the exhaust and drive belt. I figured that I should depart from the group and head back home...I went to leave and no throttle, nothing. I turned the bike off and tried again, no throttle still...crap.
At this time I figured that I had 3 choices:
1) My son-in-law was with us and I was thinking of riding prince with him to go back home and get my trailer (and leave my wife with the bike at a (very small) country store...does deliverance ring a bell?
2) Take my son-in-law's bike and ride home and get my trailer
3) Ride home and hope that the transmission doesn't seize up and that the throttle would magically start working again

I turned off the ignition and let it sit for a few minutes while I considered my options. I started it again and the throttle was (magically) functioning properly again so I rode the SERG home.

As soon as I got home, I put the bike on the lift to examine the problem. The drive belt was covered with oil, the exhaust was really messed up and will take some serious steel wool action to clean it up, the left side of the tire had quite a bit of oil absorbed into it, and I confirmed that the leak was coming from the transmission. Fortunately it was still leaking so I know that I didn't run it dry. When the SERG was on the jiffy stand it was leaking but as soon as I got it level on the lift it quit. I called the dealership and they said to bring it in...so of course I did (warranty repair).

I figured that as long as the transmission has to be serviced, they might-as-well put on the chrome inner primary that I had already bought (saving me a few labor $$$ with the install). I also figured that since they had to look at the throttle wiring it would be a good opportunity to replace the handlebars with the Wild1 WO517's (that I had already bought) and put on the chrome switches (that I already had bought) and installing the garage door opener (again that I had already bought) hopefully saving me some more labor $$$.

Soooo, by having bad luck with my leaking transmission gasket it was a good thing and I saved some $$$ right?

You were very fortunate to find the silver lining in that cloud. I hope I don't have have to check my luck the same way :nixweiss:

My brand new 09 SERG had a oil leak coming out of the oil sensor o ring. My bike had about 85 miles on it. Was a quick easy fix luckilly but really rained on my parade.

My SERG also had a oil drip. Noticed it after the ride home (90 miles), they replaced the the oil sender unit and no further issues in over 3500 miles. Good luck with getting your bike back on the road where it belongs....
