extended warranty or not?
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:15:30 PM »

I have an 07seuc, has 8500 mile son it. I had the campain done last fall. My warranty is up in June of this year.  Since we have had problems will Harley stand behind issues with heads and leaks without warranty?  What does it cost normally to replace head and base gaskets if you hire it done?  I struggle with purchasing extended warranty. I normally never do and and not had any reason to. I thought about trading and buy a new seuc but really like my bike.

Just wondering what some of the common failures people have had would cost if you had a dealer ship make repairs off warranty?

I would venture to guess, but won't guarantee, that beings this was a major product enhancement, and they gave everyone that was included in it, 2 years to get the program done, that the MoCo will probably cover any related leakage that might happen with the new enhanced heads.  So far I haven't heard of any rampant head gaskets leaking problems with anyone that has had the product enhancement done.

Personally, if I'm buying Ultra Classic with it's million miles of wiring, I get the 5 year tire to tire, period.. I have a '08 SEUC which I bought the 5 year tire to tire, extendable to 10, plus my dealer offered Quality Care (prepaid service) which I purchased also and will renew after the 15k service for 5 services for $1400. Basically, all I do is put gas in my bike and ride.. Extended warranty is a good deal I believe, unless you just want to wrench your own problems and services. Just my 2 cents worth...Also, some dealers offer 2-3 years unlimited mileage for a set fee. That's great for someone who racks the miles up. Check with your dealer.. ;D

...I did buy the extended warranty when I bought the bike but cancelled it when I got the literature in the mail...basically there was just too much exclusions and disclaimers in it and I thought it would be a battle to get anything covered...I did go with the enhanced roadside service though in the event of a flat or breakdown etc...I may regret it but would hate to pay for it and then battle to get something covered...

My dealer has been great.. Just bring it on in and we will take care of it attitude. Even with minor powertrain mods, pipes, a/c, sert, dyno etc. Never had a problem..
Never been charged in the end.. Just been great.. :2vrolijk_21:

I would say as a general rule though, most dealers are not going to be as easy going. Especially if your on the road, many miles from your hometown. :-X

I also bought a 4 year extension on my new 05 SEEG from the folks in Orange, VA. Soon thereafter, my employer went bankrupt and closed it's doors, so I found myself in Texas, with my new J-O-B!   :)   All the while, putting mad miles on the scoot in the new scenery I found along the way. I never even gave a thought to my warranty, as I racked up the miles on several long trips. I can only recall one stop I had to make at the shop in Pueblo, CO, when my gear shift lever SHAFT ( that's the shaft that goes INTO the tranny which is grooved, or at least is SUPPOSED to be grooved, upon which the shifter lever mounts onto) inexplicably became so smooth that the lever just flopped around on the shaft, and I couldn't shift gears. Strangest thing. But I paid very little, for some sort of o-ring, with the rest they said going on the factory warranty (which the bike was 2 years old at the time...Did I have a two year FACTORY warranty? Huhm)
But it all caught up with me in the end, when I could not get the fuel pop-up door to open a couple years later! I finally got fed up and took it to MY new hometown dealer in  Rogers, AR.
We started this list of items that never seemed to end....including my starter, which just didnt seem to have the gumption to turn over the motor, even tho it was one of those HIGH-OUTPUT  starters. (No auto compression release in that year) The horn had quit working, and there were several other electrical and minor mechanical issues, that added up quickly. And by this time, I had found the paperwork with my Extended warranty.

Bottom line......in 2005 I paid $795 for the extended time!
in 2008, the unpaid bill was $1600+, and I paid $30 for one small item not covered.  :orange: :apple: :pineapple:

Yea, I suppose when my new '09 comes in, I am sure the warranty prices have changed quite a bit, but then so have parts and labor prices!
I will certainly consider it!!
Good luck and enjoy your new ride!

I don't normally by ext. warrenty's, but when i bought my 07 SERK, I did, reason being this was first year for the 110 and first year for the six speed on the baggers.
and would/will do the same again if i bought a new bike.
