On my last trip to Maggie Valley 87 octane was all that was avalible. I was told to bring Octane booster. But with all the gas stops I had there,I know I did not add the booster a few times.  I experienced no detonation, no backfire, no ill effects. And scince I had the wealth of all that CVO knowledge at MV, I posed the question. Why do we have to run high test or min 91 octane recommended by the MoCo. The general concensus was unless you run a very high compression motor.......[/b]aka worked to the nuts.......87 or 89 will not hurt anything.....I did go back to 93 octane once I reached rt 81 on the way home.

Not entirely true!  Lower grade fuel will work fine....... for a while.  87 octane will cause carbon to build up on top of the exhaust valves.  When the carbon deposit gets large enough, that's when the problems start.  Poor milage and performance!  The only fix then is a valve job.  So 87 or 91 is one of those "pay me now or pay me later" things!

I know a lot of folks on this site think the HD engineers are idiots, but, they're right on this one.  Use 91 octane!

Thanks for all the input.

The bike ran fine and there was no noticable performance change, no audible predetination or backfires. I will do the diagnostics tonight.

I am thinking I will find there is a cruise control issue. This morning my cruise shut off on its own, I tried to set it again and it would not take.
