ABS Rear Brake Chatter
« on: November 01, 2008, 05:24:35 AM »

I hit my rear brake a little hard for the first time and it made a chatter that felt like I was downshifting without the clutch.  Totaly different feel that the front brake.  Is this normal or is something wrong.  I actually thought I may have down shifted accidentally or had the jiffy stand down..  I can't see anything loose.  Any Ideas? :o

When the ABS activates you'll feel and hear it. I'd say what you've heard is normal.

I think what you just experienced is normal ABS chatter.  You will not only hear a rapid firing-like clatter, but you should have felt the brake pedal stuttering under your foot.  On my Street Glide the rear brake, even though there's only one compared to two up front, seems to chatter louder than the front brakes.  I went out on a lonely country road to use my ABS just to see what it felt like.   I did just front, then just rear, then both.  Interesting sensation if you've never used ABS on a bike before.

All sounds normal.

Occasionally when hitting the rear brake at an intersection, I notice the chatter.  When this happens, I notice that I have hit the brakes on some sand, small gravel, or maybe a few small bumps (just enough to cause the rear tire to lose contact with the road).  All normal, but kinda gets your attention.

The separated front and rear application I was a bit surprised by when Harley first released this version of their ABS system.  Since everything has to meet at the ABS pump/controller before going on to the wheels I'd wondered if Harley would release it a biased system mixing front and rear application from either lever.  Am glad they didn't.  But wouldn't have been surprised if they'd done so.
