Figures a guy with a site handle like yours could navigate even complicated stuff like the above.

My question should be a walk in the park. Somebody from Ireland is Irish. A person from Wales is Welsh. Folks from Scotland are Scottish. BUT, I'm never sure if people from England are English or British. Which is it, why and which do you prefer personally.

Hi Guys - Spiderman, Sadunbar et al.

You are spot on!
The Scots are indeed from Scotland, the Irish from Ireland and the Welsh.....well from Wales, and the English from England.

However the Welsh, Scots and English are all still British as we come from Great Britain. People from Northern Ireland are also regarded as British as the term is an adjective pertaining to the United Kingdom

The various terms used to describe the different (and sometimes overlapping) geographical and political areas of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and surrounding islands are often a source of confusion, partly owing to the similarity between some of the actual words used, but also because they are often used loosely.

What do we prefer? Well that depends upon who is asking!

Amongst ourselves we are sometimes fanatical in support of our own countries - come and watch a soccer (or rugby) match between England and Wales and you will see what I mean!!!

However should Johnny Foreigner mock, insult or offend any one of us, then we will stand united and defend each other to the death - without question or exception! Just because we take the p#ss out of each other, does not mean we would allow anybody else the same privilege.

As to my own personal preference? I was born in England but my grandparents are both Irish and Italian. So I am English first and British second and I support the following teams (in order) when they are playing :- England, Ireland and Italy - and obviously it goes without saying that I will support any team playing against France !

A diagram for your benefit:
