FXR4 First Ride
« on: December 14, 2008, 04:07:56 PM »

40 degrees today.  Took the FXR4 out for a spin.  Plenty of giddy up for a stage1 EVO.  The drag bars are too far away and I'm not sure about the mid controls.  After riding a Road King for the last 3 years it's weird.  No heel shift, and the trople disks on the FXR4 are way adequate.
I'll read all the posts here about handlebars and research over the winter.  I took it to my dealer and the GM, SM, and the sales guys were surprised at how clean this bike is.

Very happy!  :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Now what to do with the SERK3, trade it for a 2006 Street Glide or a 95 EVO Road King????

I still surprise some of the TC guys that I ride with and I only have a lil stage 2 in her so far.  V&H pipes, re-jetted carb, backing plate cut out, single fire ignition ..... she's plenty hot and can hang with a lot of 88" folks.... and even BEATS most of them stock  :DD

The drag bars are too far away

OH YEAH, this was one of the worst things they did to the 4  IMHO .... Looks GREAT, comfort is for CRAP !!   OK I guess if all you do is drag from light to light, other than that, those bars HAVE TO GO !!!

and I'm not sure about the mid controls.  After riding a Road King for the last 3 years it's weird.  No heel shift,

LOL  I'm sure this is something that you will find easy to adjust to.  When I ride buddys bikes that have floorboards ... man that is so weird to me.  My feet have to be so far away from the side of the bike at a stop, and you can't pick them straight up  LOL .... and heel shifter ?????  what's that for ???:nixweiss:

and the trople disks on the FXR4 are way adequate.

OH YEAH, I think the brakes on the 4 beat ANY STOCK bike that I've ridden.  I have from time to time thought about upgrading the brakes. Mostly from an appearance perspective. I think on the bike would look FANTASTIC with PM chrome calipers on it !!!!!!!!!!!!!  More performance ... maybe, but I've NEVER felt that I was in a situation where I did not have enough braking power with this bike.

Matter of fact ... the brakes are SOOOOOO GOOD in the front that you will notice significant NOSE DIVE when braking hard to decel into a curve.  You can modify your front end suspension to get around this and improve your overall handling   GIDDY UP !!!!!!!.

This is on the top of my list of things to do AFTER MY BUILD.   I've really wanted to do this for longer than I've wanted to do my build .... but sometimes things just happen different than what you might have thought they would.

WONDERFUL NEWS !!!!!!!!!!  Congratulations again !!!!!!!!!!  So glad that YOU are HAPPY with your decision and the deal that you got ..... Hard to beat that .... I know the feeling  :DD

Now what to do with the SERK3, trade it for a 2006 Street Glide or a 95 EVO Road King????

Decisions Decisions .........  I'm glad that I don't have to go through that one    LOL

We set a record here today....it was -9 degrees and with the wind chill it was -22 below zero......just a bit chilly.....

I'll read all the posts here about handlebars and research over the winter.  I took it to my dealer and the GM, SM, and the sales guys were surprised at how clean this bike is.

You know it's hard to tell anything from only one ride.....and you are right it's totally a different experience from your SERK.....and anything is going to feel strange....I remember when I rode my FXR2 home (340 miles) from where I purchased it......It took the first 75 miles just to get settled down.......and another 225 to begin to get a feel....which was about 4-5 hours of riding......but I didn't do anything to the handlebars for nearly a year....once I finally got my handle bars on my RKC figured out....(baby apes 10.5" high and 35" wide) I finally figured out that the "OEM" handle bars for the FXR2 were basically worthless....much too narrow for comfort.....especially when I would go for a ride on one, and then jump on the other.....finally found some handlebars that were quite comfortable.....and you are right those mid range controls can be a bit unique when you aren't use to them.....but if you plan on doing any "Carving" up a canyon or you ride in the "twisties" those mid range controls will come in handy.....if you are going to just do "staight" ahead riding without many turns then the "mid range" controls will loose their appeal.....So anyway take it sloooooowww or you will be making several changes along the way........

Hopefully you had fun on your first ride......lol as for trading your serk for an evo road king....now there is a grand idea......or better yet a 2002 RK carbed....that's an idea too......I can give you lots of data on why selecting a 2002 would be a tremendous choice if you decide to move away from an EVO based road king.

LOL and speaking of handlebar posts....I have done one of those two Phil....LOL....but you probably already knew that....

Regards

At the dealer.  I either go pre 2007 with a radio / fairing, or back in time to carb evo and foreget all that race tuner /EPA crap.  I 've seen technology and I don't like it.

I still vote for either the "evo" option of course.....or if you decide upon a TWIN CAM, I would vote "strongly" for a 2002 Model year Touring Bike.
