With the way the current market is going, Harleys will be worth less regardless if they have a water cooled, air cooled, oil cooled or whatever. When you pile up the bikes people can't afford with those whose owners either can't ride or have died off you will have a glut of good quality used bikes that will keep the price down for the new ones. HD has a severe marketing problem that I don't think they can overcome. The vast majority of "new" bikers are going for the faster, sleeker crotch rocket type bikes. There won't be enough new prospects to gobble up all the bikes that will be available for sale. HD will be forced to downsize or go out. Plain and simple, their hayday is over. I am glad I got mine and am able to enjoy it for some time to come, I hope. T.

This question makes me think of my 1997 EVO Fatboy and it's value. When the first Twin cams came out there were some issues and many riders did not trust the new motor or fuel injection for that matter. So my EVO bike held it's value. Once several years had gone by and the bugs were worked out on the Twin cam motor and riders started seeing the benifits to fuel injection (mechanics learned to work on it and trust it.) Then many riders wanted the new bike and my old Fatboy lost a lot in value.
I can see this happening when Harley brings out the water cooled bikes. Many riders will fight it since it's not the traditional Harley but with the recent overheating issues on the 110 if Harley can make the new bikes run cool and be of good quality (dependable) then riders will have confidence in the new design especially if it has more torque and hp.
I remember the time when riders wore "Hear no EVO, see no EVO, ride no EVO." t-shirts so I can imagine some "Say No to H2O" t-shirts being worn when the time comes.

...for a long time around here in the mid 80's the indy's wouldn't work on Evo's, "not a real Harley".  Now I think almost everyone would agree that the carborated Evo will probably be the best Harley ever offered. I had three of them and all had over 100K problem free when I sold them. In California it looks like pre 2000 anything to beat emission testing will hold its value. When the wet motors come out, they are going to have to compete with the world market and I don't think they can. The first test with the wet and younger crowd was the V-Rod and they didn't want it. I'm not sure if the mature bagger crowd will be that much more accepting, but I'll give a try when available. Doc

If they screw around with something other than a liquid cooled V-Twin configuration I believe they'll flop and your current CVO will really go up in value. This may not be a popular thing to say but Harley can't keep building $15,000+ bikes with marginal engine performance. Current and future emissions regulations will mean even more band-aids slapped onto the Twin Cam. The recent upgrades to the 09's were great, except the engine. Sorry folks 60 hp to the wheel on a 900 lb bike doesn't cut it in our modern era. Spending $25,000 to $35,000 on a CVO to get 75 hp isn't the answer either. As painful as it may be it's time for a new engine. Done correctly Harley could take a step forward. That means outside engineering for the design. Unfortunately Harley seems to have the engineering depth of a back yard kiddie pool. Put Willie G's crew in the mix and it would keep the right look. Didn't mean to go off folks but I see the biggest threat to Harley's future is trying to hold onto a little too much of their past.

I have clicked on "The same". Reason is that in a normal environment prices for the last series non-liquid-cooled would go up. However, crisis-related, I think, they'd stay the same. Some people will always look for the newest model, regardless.

Note that I have written "liquid-cooled", as I am not certain if the Moco would go for water cooled cylinders or rather oil cooled heads. Oil cooled heads would probably lower the temps enough to be safe for the durability of the engine and still be environmentally compliant. And the'd make for a much smaller cooler (maybe three times the current oil cooler), which would less compromise the looks of the v-twin. My preference.

Ride safely,
Louis

Can't fight progress.  A few years ago everyone (myself included) moaned about the migration from carbs to EFI. Now I wouldn't consider a bike that didn't have fuel injection.  Bring on the water...

Harley value today? Have you checked your local classifieds lately? People are just about giving their Harley's away, and no doubt because they have to due to our economic situation. If you are in the market, now is the time. I just hope we can all hang one and survive this mess.  :confused5: :confused5:
