What would I need if......
« on: January 20, 2009, 08:01:27 AM »

Hey fellas,
As you all possibly remember I am almost ready to start my cam changes. I have the S&S gear drive, and I also got the new cam plate from Harley. If I have to go with the new roller chain and cams etc. what will I need as far as major parts for the job? I know about gaskets, bearings etc.. If possible if someone has the P/N's for the major parts that would really be appreciated. I also have a new oil pump.
I know the new ones are using a new type of tensioner, and that's about all I know at the moment, maybe someone has a breakdown pic of the new sys also.
I know I am asking a lot and I will appreciate your help. I just want to be ready with a backup plan if the crank does not pan out for the gear drive.

WR,

If you have an S&S gear drive, wy do you need the new roller chain? The gear drive replaces the chain drive. Or am I misunderstanding something?

Yes, your missing something. If the crank runout is out of tolerance, I will go with the roller chain and cam conversion until the motor needs to be torn down and rebuilt, at that time I will eliminate the crank issue caused by HD because they were too cheap to let the lathe spend a split second longer machining it to a closer tolerance to enable gear drive installation without jumping thru hoops and spending much more money.
