Normal sound for a CVO?
« on: January 23, 2009, 07:29:41 AM »

My 09 SEUC has had a screeching sound from day one.  I get it between 1800 & 2000 rpms in first gear.  Sounds to me like it's coming from the clutch.  First the dealer said it was an incorrectly installed exhaust;  :zwtf:   His latest is that is is a normal sound from first gear on all 09 SEUC's and he said to minimize it he put in a different oil.

It sounds like a bearing getting ready to go or fingernails on a chalkboard.  I doubt it's a bearing because I have 6,000 miles on it now and the sound is still there.  Albeit quieter with the new oil.  I just don't like it and think for the money I paid for this CVO it should not be there.  I'm also uncomfortable running different oils in the holes.

I'm thinking of writing Harley because I'm not satisfied the dealer has a clue

Can't comment on the sound you might be hearing, but in regards to the different oil in different holes plenty of us do that. I use Amsoil in the crankcase, Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof in tranny, and Redline MTL in primary.

How many miles? Do you have any issue with charging system? I had a similar noise on my SERK turned out to be the nut holding the stator on had backed off, eventually chewed the teeth of the stator which is the equivalent of the a car alternator -in the V twin the stator spins around the outside of the crank shaft to create charging-just a WAG (Wild Ass Guess)??

Keep taking it back, under warranty, like you said you paid a lot for the bike, they should fit it!

Nope, charging and running fine, just that terrible screech.  It did quiet down when that put a synthetic blend in the transmission so I would think that would tell us it's in the gear box

1st gear is noisy, mine is getting better with redline shockproof in the gear box and redline mtl in the primary. 5th will whine too, new cut gears near the end of the shaft is what I reckon it is...

That's pretty much what the dealer told me; 1st and 5th.  I had my ears blown out in Nam so I don't notice 5th.  Just seems wrong that it's necessary to use someting different in the holes when MOCO ships it with SYN3.

I've noticed no shnage in the 6,000 miles I've put on until this week when they put a blend in the transmission.

How many miles do you have on yours?  ...and do you think a letter of complaint to MOCO is appropriate?

Thank you for your response.

I only have 3k on it, 2 k since I flopped out the fluids...The syn3 is ok I just prefer aftermarker fluids for better performance. Real or perceived...Mobil 1 Vtwin in the crankcase dropped engine temp 10-15 degrees and quieted some of the noises down too...

I think the whine is just in the design of sticking all those gears into that small box.
Helical cut gears, shaft position, blah blah blah, I have heard it all from dealers, local reps, pun intended.

I will say that this 09 tranny shifts easier and finds neutral better than my las 6 hd's especially with the redline fluid swap...I just turn up the stereo.

So far I like the 09 ultra better than any others I have owned...

Good luck, ride on in good health...

Like others have said there is a whine, due to the gear cut, in 1st and 5th, but I wouldn't categorize it as a screech.  If you have another dealer within a reasonable distance, or an all-dayer roadtrip, I'd take it there and get their opinion.  As far as running different fluids in the bike, a lot of us do that.  It's a personal choice, but Redline Shockproof in the tranny will eliminate a lot of the gear whine in the new six-speeds.

(They all do that is the standard Dealer Reply) Thankfully they don't, ive had two CVO's 07 and 09 and at certain speeds in 1st and 5th I can detect a very slight whine because of the straight cut gears, but ive ridden Metrics that were much louder, If you have a noise that is that disturbing and is ruining your ride I would get a second and third opinion quickly. Something is not right.

I only have 800 miles on my 09SERG but I hear the noise you hear, but only when the bike is cold, I run Red line oil Shockproof heavy in the trans , mtl  in the primary and 20/60 in the motor, this noise just started around 500 miles and only untill the engine heats up good like after 25 miles or so and it goes away. I also have a rattle in the primary that also goes away when the engine gets to full temp. It does bother me a bit but if it was bad I think it would do it all the time.  Doc
