Don just describe the gear drive conversion. The hydraulic also requires new cams AND a new camplate, besides the new tensioner and drive sysyem. If runout's good, it'll be cheaper (and to me better) to go with the gear drive. Either way, replace the inner cam bearings with the Torrington bearings. A set of gear drive cams and gears is around 800 bucks. And new camplate's around 400 bucks. You might want to look at changing your oil pump for a Feuling OP too. Another 350 bucks! Don't forget new lifters and pushrods too. Around another 300 bucks! ;)

If one were looking to minimize the expense as much as possible for a gear drive swap you could get by with cams and gears, inner bearings, pushrods and a new spring for the cam plate.  The lifters are rollers so they really don't care what cam they ride on.  If oil pressure is at least decent to begin with and pump housing shows ok it's certainly do-able this way.  Lots more options with gear drive cams so far than cams for the new tensioner system also.

Entire parts bill a bit less than a grand if done this way.  Would still have either some labor or a few tools to buy also.  None of this is ever cheap...

No thanks needed Hoist, it is my children's country as well. Besides, my Uncle thanks me twice a month.
Thank you for the input however. I do not mean to sound un-appreciating. Don't kill the messenger and all that....I just wanna ride man!

With a little mirror and an idea of what you're looking for you can inspect the tensioners in place.  They may be great.  They may not.  40-50k miles or more isn't uncommon before terminal wear.  Unfortunately neither is 20-25k.  It's just a crap shoot.  So it's worth looking.  You could also change those questionable inner cam bearings without buying anything else but a set of gaskets either.  And that's only 10 bucks or so at any local IBT or other bearing shop.  Though there would be some tool expense to get that job done.  They would be tools needed later to actually change the cams though if you had a mind to. So at least there'd be no redunancy in the tool expense.

So, I get in there with a mirror, and go no-go is pretty obvious on the shoe wear?

Actually yes it is.  The outer shoe will be directly viewable.  So you can see it to get a good idea of what you're looking at.  That will help when visualizing the inner.

Here you can see the outer shoe hanging down at the bottom of the cam plate:

And here at the top center is the inner shoe that you'll have more difficulty visualizing when assembled in the motor:

Thanks for the pictures. I see this is much more involved than my sportster based Buell was to get at the cams...
You know, its not the work involved or even the initial estimate for parts you need that kills ya, it's all the "while I am in this deep I might as well.." stuff that I am so bad about. I could start a fuel filter change on my '72 and end up with a carb in the trash and a fuel injection kit installed...
