Cam Questions?
« on: January 11, 2009, 03:36:02 PM »

I'm getting ready to get the gasket recall done on my 07' FXDSE and figured I'd get a little cam and headwork done at the same time. My dealer said they recommend  Crane 296 cams, Heads decked and ported, Zippers adjustable push rods, some baffle work on the Vance and Hines Big Radius 2into2 exhaust, and said they would check crank runout since reliability is a concern for me also.  They did not mention larger throttle body? After reading here I thought the 07's had 46mm and 50mm would be a better upgrade? Also most readers here have recommended the Se 251 cam or a few other brands. I want the bike to run better but I don't plan on doing any other motorwork other than cams and headwork because of finances now. The bike runs well now with S Sert, pipes,Zippers air cleaner, and dyno'd (95hp and 110tq.) I'm just not familiar with the Crane Cams for v-twins even though the name is big with auto engine builders. The main tuner at my dealership who I do have confidence in says they are getting the best numbers all across the powerband with this cam in the 110's? via dyno numbers :nixweiss:  I just don't want to make a mistake since this is expensive for me right now. Thoughts? Dave

I run the Andrews 32H in my 2007 springer with stock throttle body {46mm} and TFI air fuel box. Stock red line 5500 rpm. 102 hp. 114 tq. SAE  it is .570 lift and VERY quiet. Bolt in. pulls 100 tq. at 2000 rpm. but hangs on longer than the 255s.

Pulled the heads and 'milled' .015 and used a Cometic .030 hg. tried to do some valve seat cutting ,BUT, nothing there to cut !  93% !!!!!!  anyway ,shorten the valve stem .010 and was able to do a very small 60 degree. Just got in a NEW set a custom Ferrea int. valves 2.120  so will pull the heads again and see what happens. Can't leave thing alone ! Dewey

Does this mean that the "little secret" http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=31529.0 will require more work than initially anticipated?

I DO trust you, and I am watching with great interest. The Andrews 32H cams sound like a winner, are you using standard timing or +4 to increase TQ? Please share a print out of the TQ curve when you have completed the head work.  :2vrolijk_21:

Dave:  Re: your question concerning the upgrade of the CAMs you are thinking about.  When I had the Stage 2 done to my 04 FLHTCUI a couple of years ago, I had the heads worked and also replaced the OEM chain driven cams with Andrews gear driven CAMs.  What a difference in performance.  I had a good friend that suffered a broken cam chain years ago and he was stranded for several hours before a local sheriff happened along to lend a hand.    IMHO, I would suggest that you consider replacing the chain driven cams with gear driven cams.  Besides, from what I have learned, there is no HD maintenance procedure to check the cam chain for wear or stretch like there is for the Primary Chain.  You just ahve to wait until it wither fails or starts making a lot of noise just before it disintergrates.  From my limited knowledge of the mechanics of the V-twin, I am not a great fan of any chain driven component.  If I could I would replace the cam chain and the primary chain with gears if it were possible and I would not void the warranty on my 08 CUSE3. This fear goes back almost 50 years when I had a series of bikes and experienced several broken chains along the way.  Just thought I would throw this out for your consideration.  Best of luck on your upgrades.

At 11700 miles I had the 0905 campaign done. At the same time I sent the new heads out to Heldreth Performance and had them ported and polished. Did not have them decked. Put gear drive TW7HG woods cams in. Heavy duty springs. I was looking to get a cooler running motor and a little more Torque. 1500 miles so far I like it. Seems to run real nice. No funny sounds. It's been real wet and cold in Seattle.
121.49 Torque and 107.77 Horses. I think with a new TB could get more but its fine for now.

:) ;D  RJ:  Just thought I would add that John Hildreth is a goiod friend of mine and he did the head work on my 04 Ultra.  He is a great mechanic and knows the V-Twin better than anyone I know.  You have some impressive results with the work you have done on your bike.  I am still reluctant to do any major change to my 08 CUSE3 Coppertop.  I have the extended warranty so I don't want to take a chance in voiding the warranty.  Good luck and good riding with the improvements you have made.  Take care and ride safe.   :drink: :2vrolijk_21:
