Patriot Defender pipes
« on: January 26, 2009, 10:42:55 AM »

Saw these in Bagger magazine and wonder what the folks here think about the Patriot Defender 2 into 1 pipes.   www.pertronix.com/prod/harley/defenders/default.aspx#product_03
I've had the Samson rolled thunders with true duals on the SEEG and Road King before that.  Great sound but maybe I'm mellowing a bit in my old age.  Having the sound options may be kinda cool.  Any opinions as to performance, sound, where to buy at discount?       :cherry:
Thanks,
Jeff

I have never seen those before, but they look like just the ticket for people who live in a place where "noise ordnances strictly enforced" signs are commonly found...

Yeah.  I'm not sure how long they have been on the market.  They look OK and I'm wondering if anyone knows first hand how they perform.

My question would be which way do you tune the bike... when they are open, or when they are closed, and having it tuned for one way will any damage be done to the motor while riding in the opposite way of what it was tuned for. :confused5:

Not sure first I have seen them. The company is a morphed version of the PerLux (fog lights) company and been around in one way or to other since 1962-I will guess they have done their homework. The tune would probably be for the flapper open to realize the performance curves they show on the sight which would conversely lead to crappy performance when closed-unless the ECM somehow recognizes the change in exhaust flow. Is that possible?

Response I received from the Patriot Defender tech folks:

We recommend tuning your fuel injection or carburetor with the exhaust inthe open position. This way you don't need to worry about the mixture goinglean and causing harm to your engine.  When the exhaust is closed the mixture is going to get a little richer. Butit will not be enough to foul plugs or harm your engine. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me.

I think that as long as you open the flapper without too much idle time that makes sense-guess you can't really have it both ways-let us know how they really work.

Well, I got around to reading the article. They said the pipes were everything they promised in performance, and the cable operated sound adjustment was great. Also, they said the performane was better in loud or quiet mode. 100db at 4500 rpm closed. 110 db at 4500 rpm open. stock pipes are 98 db at 4500 rpm..
