Cat in header ?
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:56:07 AM »

First : I am located in gernany ( as you can see when you watch the profile , i just wanted to mention before you do a post )
As we all know , there are cats in the header of the CVO 09 and none cats in the mufflers of the CVO 09 .
Now i was asking several guys whether they also changed their header , those who replaced their stock mufflers at their standard 96cui 09 tourer into aftermarket-mufflers .
and they say that here at the EU-models would be no CAT in the mufflers but the CAT would be in the header .
I wondered because you wrote that in the US-models there is non CAT in the standard-header of the 09s .
Those of you who replaced the header from a CVO 09 into a standard 96cui header , did you really check it out whether there is no CAT in the standard 96cui header of the US-models ?
And do you know for sure that there are CATS in the mufflers of the 09 standard 96cui tourer of the US , did you check this out too ?

My knowledge before was :
US CVO tourer 2009  : CAT in header , non in mufflers - EU the same
US standard 2009 : CAT in mufflers , non in header-EU the same

My new guess :
based on those facts from you and the " facts " of the german guys :
EU CVO tourer 2009 : CAT in header and additional CAT in mufflers
EU standard 2009 : CAT in header and NON in the mufflers.

Does anybody deny or know it better for sure ????????

Yes , that is the fact .
Then it makes no sense for me to search a 2009 96cui standard header from a german bike , because it`s the same CAT-chit like mine , then i would need an american standard header .
But what is the sense for the MOCO to build two headers then .
One with and one without a CAT ?
The CATs in the US-standards are in the muflers , the germans mufflers are CAT-free - hmmmmm ?????

Why not making all CATs in the headers and all mufflers CAT-free or viceversa ????
Wouldn`t this be easier and cheaper for the MOCO ?

The reason there are standard 96" headpipes with cats is because of the State of California (CA).  CA has stricter emissions requirements than the other 49 states.  All '09 touring models in CA have a cat in the headpipe.  Outside of CA, only the '09 CVO touring models have a cat in the headpipe.  That is the reason for the non-cat headpipe.  In '08, the cats were in the mufflers.  In '09, the mufflers are cat free and the cat is in the headpipe.
Did that clear it up?

highjagger,  have a look at the end of your exhaust mufflers, if one side has a smaller diameter exhaust hole then that is a muffler with a cat.

If this would be truth then there would be one CAT behind the other ( in the header ) , thia would make no sense but it would be possible too .
The mufflers here in germany are CAT-free like the US-ones and the header has the CAT like the US-ones .
The different is the muffler :
They are the same style as the US-Streetglide mufflers but smaller diameter at the left-side core and no removable endcabs that would allow you to replace the cores ( with fulsacs ) easily .

Can anyone verify that only CA bikes have cats? And how would you know if your bike is one ie VIN? i live in Ma and was under the impression that we have started going by Ca emmissions. I really thought all US bikes now had a cat.

 :o

Yes.  I have a friend who works at the Glendale, California HD and all HD in CA come with cat's.  All.  And apparently for quite a while.

However the Vance and Hines Power Duals eliminates the header cat.

ALL 09 110 CVO Touring bikes have a cat in the header pipe, I have not encountered a standard 96 cu in non CA bike with one, if you have any doubt and have an 09 bagger pull your right muffler and take a look you cant miss it.
