For many years I did engine work (as well as the rest of the drive train) at several Dodge - Chrysler dealers.

Did everything from the puny little piece of crap Peugeot 1.6's to the 440 6-packs (a hemi or two too, just for good measure  ;D, including a few of the original "Fire Power" hemi's).

And of all the engines I overhauled the only time I replaced tappets was when there was a specific reason too. New cams did not justify an automatic tappet change.

My comments were on the premise that it seems that many recommend replacing the tappets as a "change the cam - change the tappets" rule.

Just curious as to why.

Evos and Shovels were not the same quality and 30k or at a cam change it was SOP to put in new lifters. The new motor use standard automotive lifters (Chevrolet) with modifications for the proper leak specification and oil feed to the top. It can't hurt to change them on a cam change but isn't always necessary. Prior to model year 2003 the early lifters were not as high quality as the current revision -b. Ironically they were made by Johnson before they went bankrupt and were bought by Hylift and restarted. AMS lifters are Hylift.
