New battery - Can't get my 04 FLHRCI to turnover!
« on: June 08, 2009, 04:33:00 PM »

:nixweiss: Ok, so after searching through the posts, I can not seem to find one that addresses my specific issue.

Here's the run down (so far)...
I just installed a new (from dealership) battery on my 2004 Road King Classic. Simple swap, no other issues
with the bike. I knew the battery life had well exceeded its life. The cranking got very weak so it was time for a
new one.

After installing the new battery, inspecting cables, etc., the bike would not crank/ turn-over. Lights, blinkers, horn,
and security system works just fine. I checked the battery charge and it is fine. I can hear the pump engage when I
press the on button. When I press the run button, notta. Tried putting it in 1st gear and repeated. Nothing. I checked
all the fuses and they are good.  :-\

Next?: Try jumping the bike directly from starter? Is the security system somehow jacked up? The FOB can still enable/disable
the alarm.

:2vrolijk_21: Any help would be of great assistance to me!  :2vrolijk_21:

I would check the voltage at the starter if it's good and still nothing. It just may be the starter.

Check the start button as well, I have never heard of one going bad. Not a bad idea to check anyway.

Follow the flow of electricity. Were it stops is normally the problem.

At risk of stating the obvious, take a 10 mm wrench and make sure your negative terminal connection is tight. Just a little bit of looseness cause wierd thinks to happen.

Good luck on a quick fix.

Check the cables at the battery, the positive at the starter, and at the ground lug on the frame and starter mount bolts. Unplug the solenoid (green wire) from the starter. connect a testlight to it and see if it lights when you press the start button (with the bike in neutral, on and in the run position) If the light illuminates then the problem is at or in the starter. You can also try to jump the starter. Do this by unplugging the solenoid and with a insulated wire jump it from the positive lug on the starter to the male spade connector on the solenoid. Again BE SURE the bike is in neutral!!!

??? Well, turns out I'm an idiot! After walking away from the bike in frustration, I returned with fresh eyes.
Solution: Um, loose starter wire connection. Oh brother! How did I not notice this before?

To all that responded, thank you so much for your wisdom!

CASE CLOSED!  :drink:
