For many years I was an "A" technician for several Chrysler - Plymouth - Dodge dealerships. With the quality of cars back in the 70's - 80's, I became a believer in extended warranties on vehicles.
But, that was for ONLY factory offered programs. Aftermarket program were a nightmare for the consumer.
I never purchase extended warranties for any other consumer product, the product cost to warranty cost is excessive.
Example, I just bought a Sony HDMI DVD player for $150, the extended warranty price was $23, a 15% cost. In a year or less the player will be outdated and replaced anyway.
My SEEG was $30k and the extended warranty WITH the optional tire program was $1285, a 4% cost. I figure the first breakdown after the 2nd year year will pay for the warranty. After all, we have expensive bikes with expensive HyPo motors. You just never know.
Typically, dealers have a t least a 100% markup on the warranties, but heck, 50-100% markup is the standard in the retail market.
I also like the fact that, (A) I can "cash in" the unused value if I sell the bike, or (B) I can use it as a selling point if I decide to sell the bike after 6 years. Yes, I purchased the 7 year version.
The other argument against the warranties is that you are better off taking the money you would have spent on the program and invest it. But lets face it, how many people really do that?
Me? My "Harley bankroll" is always seeming to drain, I put $$ in and then I enjoy it.
