Am i able?
« on: March 19, 2009, 12:06:47 AM »

 Howdy,
While patiently waiting for my 09 springer to arrive in may isn't possible, and since i cant rush delivery i have been looking for pipes and a tuner. I decided on big radius 2 into 1 and either a mastertune or the sert. I found a place i think i am going to get the bike tuned at when the time comes. He said if i already had the stuff installed he would still tune it depending on what i use.Has to something he is familiar with. I got cut short so i had to let him go. Thats why i am uncertain what tuner i am going to use. Anyway, in hopes of saving money, i was going to purchase the stuff myself. My experience working on a bike is still hovering right around 0 zero hours. I want to be able to in the future though and i wont learn without trying i guess. Looking at my current bike(which is a sportster i bought just to get some miles under my belt) the job seems fairly simple. I am fairly mechanically inclined. Just need a Little confidence boost here. What do you think? Is a noob able to install a exhaust and a tuner, slap it in the trailer and drop it off at pro's for some tuning?

                                                                                                                                           Thanks

Get the shop manual, take your time and plan out your actions ahead of time, think through each move before making it.  Changing pipes is one of the easier modifications, but removing even a brand new factory system will take some patience (or if you're like me, a lot of cussing).  Just take your time and ask questions if you are unsure.  BTW, try not to destroy that factory system, just in case the EPA decides we have to submit to sniffer tests in the future.

There is no real "installation" involved with the MasterTune and SSert type of tuners, since they are basically software and a small interface device that allows the stock ECM to be reprogrammed.  I suggest you call the guy you were talking to when you were interrupted and flat ask him which he would recommend.  Feel him out, and if you get the distinct impression that by bringing your own tuning device with you he will consider you a lower-tier customer than one who buys directly from him, you may want to reevaluate your choice of tuner.  Or maybe if you go into the conversation with a firm price for the various choices in hand and let him know what those prices are, he may be willing to "dicker" a little on his price.
