Six Speed Reverse gear
« on: March 19, 2009, 11:54:06 AM »

Hello,

I had a reverse gear installed on my 08 Ultra.  It grinds each time that I engage it but will engage.  I was told this was normal by installer.  Any verification out there.

Thanks,

It is made by Champion and is fine quality.  Best thing I ever did after trike conversion. Style is great and you will like.  You can see a pic and installation instructions on Champion Sidecars.com

i have looked at both - looking for folks who have used both

the baker unit high is on my "when there is cash avail ill do this" list - its a solid main shaft reverse. new end plate and cover - shifts with the main shift drum and a additional shift fork.. the champion has the advantage that i would not have to take the whole trans apart to do the job...

someday

I hate to question this, but you just posted a question about it grinding and then you go on to say that it is fine quality.  Especially if this is "normal", it doesn't sound like there's anything fine about the quality.

In contacting the producer of the product, I found that the reverse grinding is the same problem as engaging first when you hear the big clunk.  I also found out that by engaging first, prior to engaging reverse, stops the tranny from spinning and one can then immediately place in reverse without the grinding.

Hey there RoadCapt.
Sounds like you Normal is the best term for how reverse works.
It just took a little foolin with to find it.
Reminds me of first driving a stick shift, and trying to find all gears without clunking and grinding.
But eventually we all found how to..............
