30 tooth sprocket on 2007 Springer,
« on: December 26, 2008, 11:55:03 AM »

I have a 30 tooth front sprocket {Andrews} coming in the mail. Used them before on 'light bikes' with 95" - 107" motors. Great for 'light-light' . Anyone used this on a 07 with a 6 sp ? The gear ratio on my 07 Springer is crazy ! I always run 80+ mph , but I like RPMs and my bike likes 5th better. 1st gear is way to high too. I have a 2005 FLHTC 5 speed {95"} with 109 tq. SAE. and the gear ratio on that one is PERFECT.  To me ,a 6sp. is a waste. Yes , in the 60s 70s ,you wanted another gear , { pans, shovels} but I think the 5sp. are great. Anyone tried this on 6sp ?

You will probably have to change the belt as well.

2 teeth on the front sprocket moves the axle back 1/4" , and I think I will be fine as I have 1/2" or more to move the axle backward. Thank's for the response. Dewey

I put a 30 tooth aluminum sprocket on my 1995 Heritage. At the time it had a built 80" Evo(78 HP and 80 ft.lbs torque) and a overdrive six speed. The 30 tooth seemed to change everything by about 10 mph (no tach). But it had a lot better throttle response in 6th gear. The rear sprocket was 70 tooth. It came stock from Van Nuys Harley(bought it there new) with a 32/65 combo when I changed to the 70 tooth rear I had to change the belt , but when I changed to the 30 tooth front sprocket I had a lot of room for adjustment. I came to realize that on my evo all a six speed made me do was want to go 85mph all the time.
I know this response is late compared to the date on your entry and regards a different bike but I thought someone might benefit from it. I now have a 09SEUC with 2000 miles and no problems. My heritage now has an S&S107 with the same 6 speed but a 31 tooth front sprocket. (great combo). I don't reply to letters much. cahdbiker

I'm not sure what the cost is for the front sprocket, but I do know a 49 tooth clutch basket is around $350 and it comes with new primary chain.

It takes less labor and if you DO have to change the belt too, it's tons less work.

I believe the clutch basket 49 tooth gives you an 8% increase in rpms throughout each gear.

It won't affect your speedo either.

Have you thought about just doing the 49 tooth basket instead of a full primary tear down?

Just thought I'd ask.
